Hands Off My Birth Control
Start: Wednesday, November 15, 2017•12:00 PM
Join us to denounce Trump’s executive order that allows employers to remove birth control coverage from their health insurance plans on the basis of religious or moral objection. Attendees will unite in solidarity with those hurt by Trump’s dangerous policies and demand that this administration stop their attacks on Americans’ reproductive health decisions.
Also, as part of this campaign, we're asking people to submit their stories about birth control. Stories are powerful. They bring people together. They empower the sharer. They change minds. Please share yours. All stories will be submitted directly, without edits, to the Trump administration as official comments.
BACKGROUND:
In early October, the Trump administration made two sweeping and destructive moves in their continued attack against women, families, and the LGBTQ community.
After several failed attempts to repeal the
Affordable Care Act (ACA), they changed the rules and undermined the contraceptive coverage mandate provided by the law. The ACA ensured that all Americans had access to
copay-free birth control as part of their health plans. This
provision has given access to birth control to over 62
million women and saved women $1.4 billion in 2013 alone. The
new rule will be a financial
burden, as much as $1,100 more per person each year, on American women, their partners, and families.
At
the same time, Attorney General Sessions issued guidance giving
significant leeway to workers and beneficiaries of the federal government to seek religious exemptions from federal
laws that prevent discrimination. Under the
guise of religious liberty, this new guidance will allow discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community, women, and
other vulnerable groups.
