There has been much debate this past summer over labor shortages, strikes, and spontaneous low wage worker walkouts. In EWOC’s next political education panel, "Help Wanted: What does the 'labor shortage' mean for working people?", we’ll unpack the real reasons as to why labor is reacting like it is at this historical moment. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated the ongoing exploitation inherent to capitalism, while essential, low-wage workers have been given little in safety measures or increased compensation. This, coupled with the reckless drive to reopen the economy, the continued funneling of wealth up to the ruling class, and increased worker austerity has resulted in a labor force that has been pushed to the brink. Workers in occupations serving the public are concerned about their safety, the spread of the more highly contagious Delta variant, fear of future school shutdowns, lack of childcare or healthcare, and periodic quarantines of students. America’s workers are looking at low wages, horrible hours, a lack of governmental support, risks and personal costs -- and many are deciding that they've had enough.
