History of Ableism and Disability Rights - NYC

Start: Thursday, July 27, 2017 9:30 AM

End: Thursday, July 27, 2017 1:00 PM

As we fight to defend Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, and launch our own NY Caring Majority campaign, we will continue to organize with the disability rights community.

However, despite decades of powerful, inspiring organizing led by people with disabilities, ableism persists in our country AND in our movement, and many of us have never learned about the rich history of disability organizing in our country.

This training, led by Hand in Hand leader and San Francisco Senior and Disability Action Executive Director Jessica Lehman, will cover key moments in the history of the the disability rights movement in the US,  break down how we can combat ableism in our organizing, and give space to explore how we can build stronger alliances with the disability community.

As a movement committed to human rights with a goal of creating a dignified homecare system that works for both its workers and its employers, we will only be successful if we learn from and unite with the disability rights community.
