It’s Hot! We’re Mad! Rally: Tell Mayor Adams to Fight Climate Change
Start: Tuesday, July 26, 2022•11:00 AM
As unrelenting, fossil fuel-induced heat continues, climate activists and elected officials will demand Mayor Adams fully implement and enforce NYC’s landmark Local Law 97, not open up a giant corporate loophole for the real estate lobby to evade cleaning up their dirty buildings, which are the top source of NYC’s climate-heating pollution.
Local Law 97, aka NYC’s “Green New Deal” law, is the world’s most important municipal-level climate/jobs law. It is on track to create tens of thousands of jobs in design, renovation and construction as building owners upgrade their properties to high energy efficiency.
Despite the law’s job-creating benefits, Mayor Adams’ representatives have suggested they are open to weakening the law, including most recently at a City Council oversight hearing. The latest heat wave underscores the need for serious climate action now.
We will rally on the sidewalk on Broadway on the west side of City Hall (corner of Murray Street). Bring a sign and get ready to get loud so they can hear us in the building! We will also invite local media and elected officials. The rally will be relatively short, since it’s a sunny sidewalk and it;ll be hot. Feel free to bring a fan or a sun umbrella.
Together, we will call on Eric Adams to fight climate change by fully implementing and enforcing Local Law 97, not do the bidding of the real estate lobby by opening up a giant loophole through which they could “buy out” of their responsibility to clean up their polluting buildings!
