ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Alexandra Acker-Lyons has worked for some of the nation’s most prominent donors, campaigns, and progressive organizations. Alexandra is a recognized political commentator and travels internationally as a trainer for the National Democratic Institute. She is also the author of The Political Ladder: Insider Tips on Getting a Job in Politics, published in 2012, and currently serves on the Board of the Alliance for Youth Action.

Stacey Ashlund is a candidate for PAUSD school board, parent, volunteer, community leader and champion for ALL students. As a Palo Alto parent volunteer and advocate for 15 years, she has helped families in the community support their children so they achieve their full potential. She brings shared goals to light and builds consensus to achieve those goals and is passionate about education, and wants to make it more accessible, inclusive, and effective for every student.

Leah Cowan is a Palo Alto native who began her work in community organizing during Obama’s Presidential campaign in 2008. She learned first hand that community engagement and personally connecting with people was the best way to affect change. She went on to work for SEIU California, where she helped fight for working families in Sacramento.  She returned to the reelection campaign for Obama in North Carolina in 2012.  She then went on to manage a high profile Congressional race for Ro Khanna in 2014, a local race that registered hundreds of new voters in Silicon Valley. In 2016, Leah built a Parent Powered mobilization team for the children's nonprofit, Common Sense Media. Here she helped identify and train leaders to help engage parents across California to engage in ballot measures and the legislative process giving kids a voice in the hallways of power. She recently has joined Sutter Health as a Government Relations professional where she advocates for quality health care in the Bay Area.
