July 28 at Noon on Capitol Hill: Frontline Communities for Clean, Renewable Energy
Start: Wednesday, July 28, 2021•12:00 PM
Communities on the fenceline of harmful fossil fuel infrastructure and communities feeling the worst impacts of the climate crisis are coming to DC to demand a rapid transition to 100% truly clean, renewable energy.
Dirty power plants, oil refineries, terminals with idling busses, gas pipeline compressor stations, interstate highways and other polluting energy projects are disproportionately placed in communities of color. Recent research has confirmed what we have long known, that people of color in American breathe disproportionately dirtier air than White Americans.
At the same time, as climate impacts worsen, communities that have been historically disinvested in are being hit first and worst. While we spend billions of dollars to protect wealthy coastal resorts, low income communities near the shore face chronic funding and a lack of funding.
We know what we need to do to eliminate sacrifice zones and stop the rising seas. We need to require 100% truly clean and renewable energy as quickly as possible. We need to reject false solutions that continue to harm people living in sacrifice zones.
Speakers will include:
-Congresswoman Barragán, CA-44
-Samuel Jordan, Maryland State Conference (MSC) NAACP and the Baltimore Transit Equity Coalition (BTEC)
-Reverend Lenox Yearwood, Hip-hop caucus
-Kim Sudderth, Mothers Out Front
-Susan Parker, Wicomico Environmental Trust
On July 28, members of these frontline communities will come to Washington to take this message to Congress. Will you be there?
