Kayak Action to Protest the "Iroquois" Fracked Gas Pipeline Expansion on The Great Swamp - one of the largest freshwater wetlands in New York. 97 square miles in Putnam & Dutchess Co.
The Department of Interior named it a National Historic Landmark. It was declared a Critical Environmental Area by Dutchess and Putnam Counties, and an Important Bird Area by Audubon.
It provides critical habitat for rare and endangered species of plants and animals, vital water filtration and flood control, and incredible scenic views for paddlers along its 14 miles of navigable waters.
On Sunday, October 27 at 11:30 am, attendees will gather at 36-38 N Chippawalla Rd. for a brief rally on land, before getting into kayaks and traveling through The Great Swamp near the path of the Iroquois Pipeline.
If approved, the expansion of the pipeline would double the pressure of fracked gas compression inside an aged 40-year-old, 414-mile-long pipeline that should be retired.
The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, and the Department of Environmental Conservation are under pressure from communities along the route of the pipeline to deny its permit to expand, noting the polluting health hazards, noise, and greenhouse gas emissions that do not align with New York State law.
To add insult to injury, the gas is slated for New York City, and expert analysts have revealed to the New York State utility regulators, the Department of Public Service, that additional gas is not needed for the downstate gas utility, National Grid, who would seek further profits by driving up costs of local utility bills if the pipeline was approved.
Kayaks are available for attendees, and there are land-based roles for non-kayakers. There is a group from NYC traveling together by train Sunday morning.
We will meet at the clock in Grand Central on Sunday morning at 9:00 am. Contact Kim Fraczek with any questions about the train group at 646-387-3180 or kim@saneenergy.org
