End: Monday, February 01, 2016• 5:15 PM
The Labor Commission on Racial and Economic Justice was established by the AFL-CIO Executive Council earlier this year because the labor movement recognizes its responsibility to address the urgent issues that affect the lives of working people, including racial politics and tensions
The Commission recognizes that as a labor movement we share a common desire to uplift all working people and that we do this by organizing, educating and empowering our members through collective bargaining and political action. We also recognize that when we are divided we are weaker and that to protect the rights of all working people we must reach out into the community and connect with others on their issues. We must be a part of a broader movement for social, political and economic justice.
To that end the Commission seeks to create a safe, structured and constructive opportunity for local union leaders to discuss the persistence of racial injustice today in the workforce and in their communities, to ensure that the voices of all working people in the labor movement are heard, and to explore shared frameworks for understanding how the racism that especially hurts minorities also deeply harms white workers. The results of the Commission will lead to reports and tools that transform how we think about racial justice
