Living with precarity – addressing insecure and unstable work through Living Hours

“I don’t know when I will be asked to work. Or how much money I will have at the end of the month for my family. It means I cannot plan, which is very stressful.”

– worker from Southall, consulted during the consultation phase of Living Hours

With 3.7 million workers in the UK earning less than the real Living Wage and in insecure work (volatile working hours and/or in non-permanent work arrangements), there has never been a greater need for stability and predictability during uncertain times. With zero-hour contracts, gig economy work and insecurity prevalent, it’s now more important than ever to challenge this and stand in solidarity with those affected.

The Living Hours initiative is a practical solution to guarantee that low paid workers are given the stability and security they need to make ends meet. Since its launch in October 2019, the Living Hours network has expanded to over 60 accredited employers, whose total employee number is over 45,000. This session is an opportunity to learn more about how insecurity in working hours feeds in-work poverty and what we can collectively do to address it.

This learning session is taking place on Thursday 20 April - 16:00 - 17:30
