Moral Monday: Memorial & Call to Action

We are mourning but we will not be silent in our grief. Over two years, a million people in the US lost their lives to a foreseeable pandemic—the impacts of which fell most harshly on those already struggling with poverty, systemic racism, and the social evils of our country.

How many lives could have been saved if politicians had not blocked universal healthcare from becoming a reality? How many family members would still be with us if our policy guaranteed access to housing and dignified work that kept people safe?

At the June 18th Moral Assembly, Rev. Dr. William Barber II called on marchers to stop this “policy murder”, this state violence stemming from the abandonment of the poor.

In this spirit, the New York Poor People's Campaign is organizing Moral Monday: A Memorial and Call to Action in Albany on Monday, September 12 at noon. This event is part of the Nonviolent Medicaid Army Week of Action.

The first hour will be the memorial and call to action, with time after to break bread and talk with our fellow mourners.

We are calling on faith leaders and faith communities in particular to lift their prophetic voices with us but all are welcome to attend.

By registering to attend, you'll receive email updates and an opportunity to let the planners know if there is a person you'd like to memorialize during the event.

Estamos de luto pero no permaneceremos callados en nuestro dolor. Durante dos años, un millón de personas en los EE. UU. perdieron la vida a causa de una pandemia previsible , cuyos impactos cayeron más severamente en aquellos que ya luchaban contra la pobreza, el racismo sistémico y los males sociales de nuestro país.

¿Cuántas vidas se podrían haber salvado si los políticos no hubieran impedido que la atención médica universal se hiciera realidad? ¿Cuántos miembros de la familia estarian aun con nosotros si nuestra política garantizara el acceso a la vivienda y un trabajo digno que mantenga a las personas seguras?

Con este espíritu, la Campaña de los Pobres de Nueva York está organizando el Lunes Moral: Un Memorial y Llamado a la Acción en Albany el lunes 12 de septiembre al mediodía.

La primera hora será el memorial y el llamado a la acción, con tiempo después para compartir el pan y conversar con nuestros compañeros que esta en duelo.

Hacemos un llamado a los líderes religiosos y las comunidades religiosas en particular para que alcen sus voces proféticas con nosotros, pero todos son bienvenidos a asistir.
