Enjoy a great Easter holiday day out by the River Severn.

Diglis Fish Pass was installed in 2021 as part of the Unlocking the Severn Project. Join us for a unique guided tour of the site and the fish viewing gallery for the chance to see migratory fish finding their way to the upper reaches of the Severn, bypassing structures that have impeded their way for nearly 200 years.

You will hear about the project and the amazing journey of the fish, and watch a short video in the viewing gallery.

The twaite shad is one of 23 species of fish seen so far in the gallery. The fish return from the sea to the River Severn to spawn. They can now bypass the weir and travel up a series of laddered pools at the top of which they pass by an underwater viewing gallery. Peak season is May and June, but we are running this as a private event in April when there is a good chance to see the early movers, depending on water conditions and temperature.

The tour will last around 30 minutes. While you are waiting you can picnic on the bank (drinks provided) and chat to other environmentally minded people.

As this event is turning out to be hugely popular, we are running a ballot for the 15 places not yet filled. The ballot is open now. It will close a week before the event with successful applicants informed of their place by 6th April.

Everyone who RSVPs will be entered into a free draw for a £50 voucher for Be The Change, a leading vegan restaurant in New Street, Worcester.

Access: It would be best to arrive on foot or by bike. There are plenty of places to secure bikes. Parking is nearby at the Weir Lane industrial estate, off Bromwich Road. Walk down to the river and turn left at the footbridge. The Canal and Rivers Trust compound also has some parking on the city side of the river bank - it is an 800m walk across the footbridge.

Dogs and children are welcome to the picnic. Children are welcome in the viewing gallery.

Unfortunately there are no toilets available or near! We will endeavour to negotiate access to a private loo on Diglis Island for those in need but this is not guaranteed.

This activity is not suitable for the disabled or those not able to negotiate 30 steps to the viewing gallery. The viewing platform and picnic area are accessible and there may be the opportunity to view live feed of the viewing gallery via a tablet by the time of the event, although this is not guaranteed.
