Newsom: Code Red for Climate Justice

Start: Tuesday, September 28, 202112:00 PM

On Tuesday September 28th, climate, environment, and public health advocates will unite to start the clock on Governor Newsom’s post-recall climate justice agenda with a demonstration on the steps of the Capitol Building in Sacramento. As the public health cost of California’s rapidly worsening wildfire season mounts, and climate disasters increase in severity and frequency - Governor Newsom faces a new urgency to take action and end our state’s biggest contribution to greenhouse gas emissions: fossil fuel extraction.

The recall is over. The fight for Climate Justice is not.

Join us for a creative art installation and demonstration - we'll have large-scale props, signs, and banners for all. We'll meet at the North Steps of the Capitol (near 11th and L) Tuesday at noon.

We're glad that Governor Gavin Newsom beat the right-wing recall - and that he articulated an increasingly progressive vision for California that spoke to the crises of housing, health,  wildfires, and climate change.

But we need more than just a progressive vision - we need tangible action today. While Newsom has made some steps to limit fracking and set climate goals for 2045, he's still approved permits for over 9,000  oil & gas projects since taking office. As record-setting wildfires rage and he nears his final term in office, we need him to end permitting for ALL new fossil fuel development, and establish a 2500' health and safety buffer to protect the most vulnerable communities from nearby wells.
