Bristol Stop the War Meeting: Britain's Global Role - No Return to Blair's Wars
Start: 2021-06-17 19:00:00 UTC Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna (GMT+01:00)
This is a virtual event
In recent weeks, Boris Johnson has been telling us that
Britain is getting ready to have a new role in the world. Britain's
military power is to be displayed far and wide. The defence budget is to
be vastly increased. Millions of pounds have been spent on a new
aircraft carrier which is to be sent to the South China Sea. Britain
will increase its stockpile of nuclear warheads beyond that allowed by
international agreements. At the same time money can only be found for a
miserly 1% pay increase for NHS staff.
While Jeremy
Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party we would have expected there to be
loud opposition to these policies in Parliament and out. Instead, under
Keir Starmer the party has wrapped itself in the Union Jack and meekly
accepted them. Some in the party argue that Labour should return to the
sort of interventionism favoured by Tony Blair that resulted in defeat
in Afghanistan and chaos in Iraq, Libya and Syria.
At the same
time as taking increasingly aggressive stances towards both Russia and
China, Britain continues to sell arms to Saudi Arabia for use in its war
on Yemen that has brought death and famine to hundreds of thousands.
And Britain takes the side of Israel in its continuing denial of rights
to the people of Palestine.
Join Bristol Stop the War in this meeting to discuss how Boris Johnson's
plans will make the world a less safe place and how we can build an
anti-war movement to stop them.
Speakers:
Lindsey German and Andrew Murray,
authors of Stop The War's latest pamphlet 'No Return To Blair Wars'. Jon
Reddiford is an executive member of the National Education Union, an
important trade union supporter of Stop the War.
