I suggest that folks feeling urgency around taking action, come to Plymouth next Thursday for the annual Day of Mourning. More info is available at http://uaine.org/

WHEN AND WHERE IS DAY OF MOURNING?
Thursday, November 24, 2016 (U.S. "thanksgiving" day) at Cole's Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, 12 noon SHARP. Cole's Hill is the hill above Plymouth Rock in the Plymouth historic waterfront area.

    PROGRAM:
Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to stand with us, it is a day when only Indigenous people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas. Speakers will be by invitation only. This year's NDOM is dedicated to the Water Protectors everywhere including those at #StandingRock #NoDAPL, to Native political prisoner Leonard Peltier, and to the Indigenous Peoples Day movement.

    WILL THERE BE A MARCH?
Yes, there will be a march through the historic district of Plymouth. Plymouth agreed, as part of the settlement of 10/19/98, that UAINE may march on Day of Mourning without the need for a permit as long as we give the town advance notice.

    In solidarity, Nancy

Thanks for sharing this info. I'm planning on going and hope to bring the WATER IS LIFE banner 20 of us held on a bridge over the tidal river in our village on the 15th. If anyone wants to carpool from the outer Cape, let me know. I still have wonderful memories (and photographs I took) of the first Day National of Mourning I attended with my father in 1970.

Friends, there is no event in Concord planned by this action planning team for the week of November 22nd (and if you were paying close attention, you would have seen that the November 22 date was always tentative). If you want to understand the context and the reasons for this long delay, keep reading.

Please read the rest of this post before posting your reactions.

We are considering an action in Concord for Saturday December 17th
(perhaps to begin at 10am). This is NOT DEFINITE.

Over a thousand people will receive this message. It is important that you take the time to read the details below if you want to know them. I cannot continue to answer hundreds of individual emails that ask me to reiterate information that is readily available to you already.

Mark your calendars for a fundraiser for Standing Rock in Boston on Saturday, December 17th (in the evening) at Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square (Roxbury).

On Saturday, November 5th, more than 250 people from many backgrounds gathered for an open meeting at the North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB) to begin a process of building relationships between non-Native activists and local Native communities. This meeting was convened at the same moment that the call went out from Standing Rock for a National Day of Action focused on the Army Corps of Engineers. The 250+ people gathered at the NAICOB meeting empowered a small group to designate a planning team for the November 15th day of action. This team represents local groups that focus on direct action and includes representation from Indigenous leadership and non-Native people of color groups.

This planning team (with input from a broader set of local Native leaders) determined that it was necessary to postpone a jointly planned action focused on solidarity with Standing Rock in order to build relationships and trust among these groups. Instead of organizing an action at the Army Corps of Engineers in Concord as originally planned, we agreed (at the request of local Native leaders) to ask our RSVP list and our own groups to show up for an action planned and led by Native American Studies professors and students at UMass-Dartmouth. Many of you showed up for this event.

The day before the National Day of Action, the Army Corps of Engineers released a statement delaying their decision on whether to authorize the Dakota Access Pipeline crossing of Lake Oahe (a reservoir on the Missouri River). On the Day of Action, about two dozen people went to Concord to the Army Corps office on their own, and the staff in that office came out to greet them and to express solidarity.

In light of the delay, the expression of local support at the Army Corps office, and continuing requests from local Native groups for a relationship building process, we are considering organizing an action (which is unlikely to include civil disobedience) at the Army Corps of Engineers office in Concord on the morning of Saturday, December 17th. One reason for choosing this date: thereis a fundraiser for Standing Rock that evening at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury, "From the Blue Hills to Standing Rock," featuring music, dance, and spoken-word artists offered by local indigenous performers and friends.

Planning for December 17th would allow us to schedule art builds and engage one another to build relationships (not just among the planning team, but more broadly - in ways that you could choose to engage).

I know you are frustrated about what seems a lack of urgency from this planning team. We are engaged in a process that 250+ people asked us to enter into. I want to thank those who have expressed their frustration constructively. I want to ask those whose frustration was expressed in destructive ways (either on the discussion board or more dramatically in my email inbox) to re-read your words before posting or hitting "send".

The planning team has a conference call Monday (November 21). It is our goal to open the process further after that.

A final request. Before you ask for more information via the discussion board, please look at the existing posts to see whether your question has already been asked today. At this point, I am posting all new information in the event description, on the discussion board, and in emails to the RSVP list.

If you unsubscribed from emails about this action, you won't get new information from me by email. If you want to change your settings, click on the Dashboard (next to your name at the top right of the page when you are on the event page), and then click "Edit Email Subscriptions" and find the event "Nov 15 #NoDAPL Day of Action at Army Corps of Engineers's list" and click on the button to the right to change your preferences.

Marla, Thank you, this has been a very trying time through out this process and your efforts for a more defined day for the USACE gathering have been long and arduous. It was also pleasantly surprising to read those that did go on the 15th were greeting with open arms and treated accordingly by the PR person listening. This is enlightening seeing what has occurred out at the Bismark offices, So thank you for your awesome efforts, even though you have been inundated and yes you and I have agreed to disagree on some aspects pf the postings and events. Not always good buy dialogue/opinions of any sort can be constructive at the end of the day. Is there any detailed information you can share/post for preparing for the Dec 17th [assume same time between 12:00 to 1:00 PM] at the USACE offices at Hanscom AFB. will you be having a strategy meeting, people can attend between now and end in the Boston city are - near where you reside?

      marla marcum Event Creator

Geoff, my intent was to make it clear that I will share ANY additional information I have with you all as soon as I have it. As such, I cannot answer any of those questions yet. I very much expect that the open meetings will be for the purpose of engaging people in some interactive creative processes to support the event. I do not think there will be an open strategy meeting for this one event. People are free to organize other efforts independently, including meetings to talk about strategies for efforts they might organize. In my experience, an open strategy meeting is appropriate for a long-term campaign. An event/action requires focus on logistics and coordination, and we'll engage folks for help with these things as they are defined for this event. Again, we are not attempting to set the course for how the whole region organizes. People who need a different mode of organizing should definitely build that with others. There are many ways to fight for justice!

Thank you Marla for all your patience, hard work and generous spirit. So grateful for all you've done, including posting this in time for those of us who live far away to cancel travel plans. I'm happy to stay connected and am deeply moved by how many in Massachusetts and around the world are drawn to stand with Standing Rock. Don't quite understand the plan to gather at Concord ACE offices on a day the offices are closed (though I do get the connection with the benefit that night). In any case, wishing you all safe and peaceful travels and finding ways to show up, including in Plymouth on the National Day of Mourning.

I have folks from my church asking about Tuesday. Is there anything definite yet?

What is the word on Concord for next Tues?

    • Gravatar

Ditto. Need to figure out if I'm heading west from the Cape again. Any idea how many of the original 800 or so signers are still on board? If there's anything like that number, is there a user-friendly plan to organize ride-sharing ?

Thanks to Su Turner for bringing up the Next Four Years conference being held at Simmons College on December 3rd. Registration at http://next4yrs.bpt.me/ and more information at http://masspeaceaction.org/event/the-next-four-years/

Climate justice is a key core component of many of the plenaries and workshops throughout the day. Emily Kirkland of 350.ma is one of the plenary speakers and Bill McKibben has provided us with a video in which he stresses bringing together our separate issues.

Even workshops not specifically on climate justice may touch upon it (for example the workshop on fair trade not free trade I m facilitating will discuss the draft proposal from the Sierra Club on how to shape a more climate friendly global trade and investment regime.

Hope to see may of you there.

Carolyn, the Facebook event doesn't say anything about it, and I don't have more information than that. Native leaders planned this action. I am not on the planning team. Here's the text from the Facebook page:
      Details
In response to the call for A National Day of Action, there will be a solidarity observance at UMass Dartmouth organized by Native American faculty and students.

On Tuesday, Nov. 15th, At 1pm, attendees will gather in front of the Frederick Douglass Unity House at the UMass Dartmouth Campus Center and the procession will be led to and through the quad of the campus. As a state facility, UMass Dartmouth is subject to the exercising of aboriginal rights. Native drums are welcome.

All Native/ First Nations people and supporters are invited to attend and participate. For more information, the point of contact is Bro. Mwalim.

      Here is the plan:

      - ALL SIGNS ARE TO ONLY RELATE TO Standing Rock Sioux Tribe AND STATEMENTS AGAINSTS ANTI-NATIVE VIOLENCE.

      - Meeting in front of UMassD Frederick Douglass Unity House @ 1PM

      - Follow the drum procession around the quad @ 1:15PM

      - Gather in the quad, between the LARTS building and Campus Center with signs a drums and honor songs.

      - This is a non-violent gathering and observance. Violence initiated by participants will not be tolerated.

      - We are issuing a printed statement and there will be no speakers.

      -Event definitively ends at 4pm

-We are asking people to take pictures and videos during the observance and post on all social media, with the hashtags #NoDAPL #WaterIsLife #StandingWithStandingRock #JusticeOrElse

We are issuing a printed statement and there will be no speakers.

Friends, I just posted this update on our action page https://actionnetwork.org/events/nodapl-solidarity-action-3/

We figured out why there has been so much contradictory information coming your way... keep reading....

THERE IS NO ACTION PLANNED FOR CONCORD, MA ON NOVEMBER 15TH.

Click here for the Facebook event for a #noDAPL solidarity action that local Native leaders are planning at UMass Dartmouth on November 15th. They have asked us to join them there and to invite you to do the same.

... and to postpone taking action at the Army Corps of Engineers.

You can read more about this decision and the process for reaching it below.

We have determined why there is so much online confusion. Somebody posted a separate event in Concord at the Army Corps for November 15th at noon (the same time and day we orginially listed here) AFTER I had changed the date of this one. Some of the national groups picked up that one and pushed it out to people (including many of you). So you were getting emails about a different event page, which is why the information was so confusing.

I just spoke to the organizer of that event, and he is emailing the 19 people who RSVPed and letting them know about tomorrow in Dartmouth and to RSVP here for updates on an action to be planned very soon in Concord. He looks forward to joining us then.

THE GROUP I AM WORKING WITH was tasked with planning a response to the national call to action by 250+ attendees at a meeting hosted by the Native American Indian Center of Boston on Saturday, November 5th. In our planning process, we were asked to slow down and plan a joint action in a good way – in ways that demonstrate that we not only see and hear the Water Protectors at Standing Rock, but we also see and hear our local Native communities. We will be planning an action at the Army Corps of Engineers in Concord, MA for next week. We meet Wednesday night this week to set a date.

NOTE: we are putting together a social media packet as digital response to action items requested in national call. Please watch out for these first thing tomorrow Tuesday.

so-called Dartmouth, MA (November 14, 2016) – As part of an 11-15-16 National Call to Action, issued by and to indigenous communities and our supporters, we are gathering on the UMass Dartmouth campus - built on the ancestral territory of the Wampanoag people - as members of the Wampanoag community, along with members of other Indigenous tribes, bands and nations, and with supporters and friends, to stand in solidarity with our relations at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota.

We take issue that a pipeline is being imposed upon the Standing Rock reservation, not only in violation of the tribe’s standing treaty with the United States government, but also for endangering the area’s water supply in favor of corporate interests. We renounce the civil and human rights violations by private, state, and regional law enforcement against the courageous efforts of ‘Water Protectors’ resisting to save their drinking water and to enforce their treaty rights.

UMass Dartmouth, as all state colleges and institutions of higher learning, was established as a result of the 1790 Land Grant Act which violated many treaties with native people in favor of appropriating land for institutions. Because UMass Dartmouth has a publicized commitment to “Civic Engagement” and developing a “Globally Engaged Citizenry,” we find the location an appropriate place for us to gather and express our commitment to seeing that justice prevails in the on-going battle against gross violations of treaties and human rights of indigenous people, by local, state and federal governments and officials.

We gather to call attention to:
The issues at Standing Rock as part of an on-going struggle against colonial violence and the on-going war against Native/ First Nations people; originally waged by the European invaders in Jamestown, VA and Plymouth, MA without interruption.

The efforts of Native people to survive as having gone unnoticed because the law of the land is rooted in white supremacy.

The truth that Native/ First Nations people have, historically and presently, endured ongoing violations of human rights and dishonored treaties well beyond that of any other so-called minority group in the United States.

The pipeline issue as part of a larger issue around environmental racism, classism and gender violence.

The redirection of the pipeline to the Standing Rock reservation from a mostly white, middle-class community as consistent with the tendency of the government and corporations to carelessly poison the atmosphere and environment where people of color and the poor live.

What do we want? Native Liberation! Self-Determination! Honoring of our Treaties! Native/ First Nations Survival!

Everybody needs to go to the action page (if you are reading this on a web page, find the spot in your screen to click to see the action details. If you are reading in email, you'll have a link to the discussion board and can then take the step I suggested above. The information about what is going on is in the action description. There are hundreds of people on this list. It's really important for each of you to take the time to read the information provided carefully. It is all there. You may just have to read more than a one sentence answer. If you are reading this in your email and are confused, please click the link to the discussion board, read the event description, and read through the discussion board. Trying to follow the discussion board as it appears in your inbox is too confusing. You can read it all in one place and in order on the webpage.

There may be an irony here but many people will be traveling to be with their families for Thanksgiving that week. Followed by Black Friday? Another irony. We might get a larger crowd if our demonstration is the following week or at some other strategic time. I'm sure the organizers are checking dates that might subvert attendance. Sports playoffs, is the Pope coming to town, etc.

Folks, the organizers for the event that our Native neighbors are asking us to attend on November 15th have put up a Facebook Event Page. That's the only place to get information on that event. Please note in the event description, the organizers are VERY clear about what they are askign people to do and how they are asking everyone to show up. https://www.facebook.com/events/1878903025671184/

If you are supporting that can you please post the info on the event information and take down the meet in Concord for the 15th. Also, is there anyone else going to the event at Dartmouth from the Concord area to car pool with?
    Thank you

In re water-protectors and climate-protectors, check out this good news re inter-generational climate justice: a chief spokes-person in this historic case is 16-year-old Xiuhtezcatl Martinez who also stood on front lines at Standing Rock: http://motherboard.vice.com/read/kids-win-the-right-to-sue-the-us-government-over-climate-change

  • Gravatar

For as many reasons as there are humans who signed on, we're here because we're moved to show up and speak up on behalf of Indigenous protectors of sacred Water, Earth and sovereignty at Standing Rock, and on behalf of allies, many of whom are also risking their lives. Some of us have friends and family who were on the front lines or are there now. Some of us were there or are ready to answer the call to go. Some of us have been arrested before in defense of Mother Earth, some are willing to risk arrest now. We have 800 or so unique stories. At the same time, whatever our story, whatever tribe or clan or culture or family we were born into, we are one. And each one of us represents hundreds more who want to do whatever is asked of us to assist these peaceful warriors fighting for their lives (and for ours too). However much we all have to learn about respect and all the isms that block it, our unity and growing numbers are the only chance we have to stop the monsters of greed, ignorance, hatred and violence already devouring our children's future.

  • Gravatar

Folks, if I may, I think there are two (obviously related) issues here. One is how the pipeline is affecting our native brothers and sisters and how they want us to be of help to them. The other is the issue of climate change and pollution that this and other fossil fuel projects are part of. My suggestion is that we follow the organizers' lead on what they want us to do re: supporting the Water Protectors. And that we pursue other measures in our efforts to combat climate change as well as the racism that is so much a part of these kinds of projects. There's plenty of work to do on all levels.

  • Gravatar

Please let's honor, respect and support these good people working very hard to organize and coordinate this event. Last week was devastating and now more than ever we need to stand together in unity. Organized, the world will hear our roar. Folks, where there is confusion, I hope that we can all slow down and absorb the information available. There is no Sunday action scheduled. Have a look at the action page, the description there, and the longer email I sent. They say a few things: 1) we hope by Nov 17th to announce an action date for Army Corps of Engineers in Concord, MA. 2) we are hopeful it to land that date next week (the week of Nov 20th... NOT on Nov 20th). 3) the action page says thank date is the 22nd because I had to choose a date. 4) The action title says the date and time are tentative... The time is not right for sure because it's set at midnight.

As for the other points if contention, disagreement, etc. expressed on this discussion board, I want to let everybody know that this platform dies not give organizers an option to moderate the discussion. So I want to encourage us all to bring our best selves to the discussion. There are a few posts here that I think fall short of that goal. If you want to take your anger out on me personally, I can accept that. I am going to have a more difficult time accepting racially insensitive language on this discussion board. It is possible to disagree with the decisions of this event's organizers without doing so from a position of animosity toward entire communities.

Finally, I can take down the discussion board altogether, and I am willing to do so if we are unable as a gathered crowd to show respect and empathy for stakeholders in this process. Disagreement is healthy. When we move to name-calling and belittling others, we go too far.

We are addressing in this process some of the most toxic and broken parts of our society (colonial oppression, racism, white supremacy, class-based violence, misogyny, and more). I know that is uncomfortable, and it is not easy. We won't all be in the same place on a variety of questions. That's ok. I think it's important to be honest about where we are and what feels threatening or confusing, etc. I hope we can be open to listening deeply to others when they say to us that something is harmful to their communities and that it has been for generations: some position we hold (or don't hold), some action or inaction, some way of looking at them or way of looking right past them, as if they are invisible.... Racism and other forms of oppression are systemic. Just about none of us want to believe we create, perpetuate, or enact anything racist. That's not who we want to be. It's easy to feel defensive when someone asks us to be accountable to that intention.

For my part, I think everybody is entitled to begin this journey from exactly the position they currently inhabit. I would never expect anybody to do otherwise. I am committed to working with others to build clearer consciousness of my own complicity and to be held accountable to my intentions. And I am committed to holding others accountable in a spirit of love. Recognizing that we are all imperfect and in need of some compassion (and forgiveness when we mess up).

Trying to live as though LOVE is a verb,
    -Marla

I'm sorry to see that our desire to respond to call for a national day of action -- of unity -- has been waylaid by the false idea that someone owns the rights to protest. Is DAPL about indigenous rights? Of course. Is it also about climate change? Of course. I will be going to Turner's Falls on Tuesday, because I want to be visible on that day. I'm sorry if there are local indigenous people who don't want me to protest about climate change in the name of Standing Rock. I'm going to do it anyway. No disrespect intended. I've sent the water protectors a lot of money. I want them to succeed. And I want a survivable planet.

  • Gravatar

Let's give massive kudos to Marla and the other core organizers. This is not easy stuff and now that we are in the "belly of the beast" it will be come even more difficult. the long game is important but we must also RESIST at every opportunity. I understand the concerns about sovereignty, white privilege and all the rest but what is wrong with, in the short term, demonstrating IN SOLIDARITY with our indigenous brothers and sisters. This event is to be national in scope, aimed specifically at the Army Core of Engineers, and we lose our collective voice by choosing a different date and time (esp. if the offices are closed on a Sunday). For me, Mass or Newton City Hall doesn't really hack it. We need to look the enemy in the eye. this is not just a question of moving the pipeline off of Native American soil. This is a fight for Mother Earth and the millions of species on our planet being affected by climate change. We must stop the fossil fuel industry and move toward a sustainable future. Peace and Love. Kirk

DAPL funders (ie TD Bank and Bank of America among others) may be more effectivel action sites than City Halls (esp if civil disobedience is planned); or solidarity stand-outs near the sacred sites or vulnerable water-ways that may rouse wider interest, understanding and empathy w/ SR. Right now I'm preparing to head back to the Cape (belatedly) trying to organize and post an Outer Cape event for Tues (maybe rainy day) and trying to figure that out w/ near zero lead time!

So I am very confused now. Event info has a demonstration change date to Nov 22 but the Nov 15th date is still in the main green box on the website. Also is there a Native Demonstration in Dartmouth on Nov 15 and who is going to that? Is it possible to get a ride from Concord to Dartmouth if that is happening. Please this is a very confusing site - please list what is happening, time, date, where. i have been hearing and posting on FB about this type of response happening all over the US, is this happening and is this in solidarity with all the protests. thank you, Patricia Thatcher

  • Marc Osten

Friends - Marla and others have worked like crazy, I suspect, to get things going and keep up with all the excitement, passion and communications. So here are just a few things to consider as we all work to escalate the battle for real systemic change. Those of us who are organizers and sign up for these types of efforts that others are planning should step up early, via private email, and offer help to the lead organizers. They can say no thank you but we do need to offer it.

Here are a few suggestions for next time before publicizing an event. Make sure the core details are all in place which would include things like:

    - What is the message
    - What are the spokespeople
    - What is the primary strategy and associated tactics
    - What is the outreach strategy
    - What is the communication strategy
    - Who will liaison with local officials, police, emergency services
    - How will childcare support be organized
    - What will be the logistics related to travel

The passion and energy is great but the last thing we want is to alienate people and it wasn't the volume of emails that were the primary issue for many folks. It was the lack of clarity.

    Peace - m

      Marc,
Thank you, for your comment and added direction when planning such an endeavor of planning a gathering/protest at the USACE NE offices; who as an agency have been the folks who have ignored the Standing Rock Nation and many other tribal nations when it comes to their Nations Sovereignty.
I have explored all the different agency websites for all the Impact Statements, Incident Protocols and "By Law" communications with all and any Stake holders along the Route.
To be honest all and every Tribal Stakeholder(s) have not been properly informed or involved, if they were? - David Archembault has verified many of the Tribal Nations/Elders never got any Notification even when they requested said details. Again all pointing to the "Old White-men in charge through out", how shameful in this age of recognition and respect for all persons irrespective of Color/Religion or Race.
One thing everyone, from day one, has forgotten that all the Tribal Nations were and have been here before any White Men, irrespective of where they came from, arrived in the North American Continent. So anyone not a member of an Tribal Nation is an Interloper/Trespasser anywhere in these current United States.
The Nov 15th day should in my opinion still have a presence at the USACE MA offices at Hanscom, Concord and also at UMass Dartmouth near Bedford MA doing phone calls and letter writing to Congresspersons/Senators?
I have a number of Native American Friends in Maine tribes, Southern Colorado, Southern Utah and the Navajo Nations and have always assisted them where I can and could when there lands were invaded by the Washington Lead "White-men" who claimed they had the rights at Indian Bureau of Management, USACE, EPA and Congress-all under the guise of national needs for minerals, energy and pipelines along with voiding the rights of the Tribal Nations.
Does any feel Marla and the others on the organization committee should look at having some presence on Tuesday at USACE NE offices?

    • Gravatar

Sorry meant to say at the end of the 1st paragraph "No filed statements are visible for review anywhere".
I am also the Great, Great Grand son of Fridtjof Nansen the Norwegian explorer and Nobel Prize winner for his work with displaced people and UN envoy, so I feel associated with his work.

    • Gravatar

As long as it's in compliance with what the local Native Leaders, and the people of Standing Rock want then yes I think a presense at the USACE NE offices is what should happen. I thought that was the point of Nov 15th all along.

    • Gravatar

If the local Native leaders want us white people to go to UMADARTMOUTH, that is what we need to do, imo. Otherwise, we are not walking our talk and also there will be fewer people at UMADARTMOUTH.

While I am here, want to let you know that I am glad you deleted "Old" as the first word in what is now "White-men" In my experience, the white men old boys clubs come in all ages. Depends on where you put the "old."

    • Gravatar

      Sheila,
I was first referring to the Indian Bureau of Land Management who is hosted and run by a disproportionate number of "Older" (45 years and Older) people and no[t] real representatives for ALL TRIBAL NATIONS on any of the Bureau's committees. At any of the meetings the Tribal nations are reduced to being in the Audience, if they can make it from the different areas of the United States where they have historically been placed by the Indian Bureaus and the White Men who run them.
Is a national disgrace, just as Slavery and Black/Colored Discrimination has and still is, practiced.
Under neath our outer skins we are all the same no matter how you look at a person and thus should be respected for who we/they are.
The Bureaucrats are to blame for all this disruption of a Sovereign Nations Sanctity to be run over time and time again and all for the sake of powerful and greedy corporations stealing from the earth that is a tribal nations congressional sanctioned Sovereign Right and their Sacred Tribal Burial/Burying lands.
As I posted earlier, "would anyone want a pipeline through the Arlington national memorial cemetery for the defenders of the USA, of course NO. The same applies to the Standing Rock Nations sacred burial grounds." or any other of the Tribal Nations Sacred grounds. And remember many Indigenous and colored, Military people and their are numerous service people (male and female) are buried in National Arlington Cemetery with honor for their sacrifices.
So we should therefore honor the Standing Rock Nation and all other Tribal Nations with the same dignity accorded those in the National Arlington Cemetery for all our fallen wounded warriors. By moving this unapproved and trespassing pipeline project from a Sovereign Nation sacred lands and water rights, no matter what it costs the Energy Company through there thoughtless and illegal decisions together with a serious callousness through continued secrecy of there actions.

Marc, as soon as we have a date for an action at Army Corps of Engineers, we will of course be needing people to help with all of those things.

We were asked to hold off on sending an update for a number of reasons.

I have been organizing and publicizing complex events for 20 years. I wrote most of the organizing toolkit (the parts about how to organize an event) that 350.org sent out to support organizers of these events. Literally. I wrote built that resource for them last Fall. I understand this iteration wasn't ideal for you all, and we probably could have figured out something better. I hope people can step out of their personal sense of frustration and embrace the uncomfortable (and inevitably messy) process of building real relationships across lines that have long divided us.

I put a pin on the map just before the call went out publicly so that when people went online to look for an action, they would see one in one of the places that the Water Protectors at Standing Rock explicitly asked us to go.

Then I let others know I had done so and we agreed to wait to organize specifics until we had a representative group of climate, faith-based, Native, and non-Native people of color groups represented in planning. Because those relationships are not all pre-existing (we haven't done our work well enough to have a base to build on yet), that step took a week.

Once we had that group, we were asked to slow down and build some relationships where none existed. We were asked by our new partners to be deliberate and collaborative about the messaging, and that took longer than we hoped, but we stuck with it because we respect one another and want to work together for the long term.

Finally, I was getting MAJOR complaints (sent directly to my email from people who RSVPed) about the volume of email. It was a problem for many. And continues to be.

Geoff, the organizers have committed to fully supporting the Native-led event at UMass-Dartmouth. We are not going to organize something for November 15th in Concord. We were asked by our partners to hold off on that, and we agreed. If there are other organizers who want to step outside of this process, there is nothing preventing that. You can ask us to go back on our commitments, but we won't. You all didn't make those commitments and can decide whether to opt-in to them or not.

    • Gravatar

THANK YOU Marla and other organizers for being true to your commitments.

    • Gravatar

Geoff, I have no idea whatsoever why you are lecturing me, man-splaining to me. I am ending this conversation with you here now. I am on FB if you must continue = but not on this board.

Marla - I went to the demonstration at Mewton City Hall - and it was great!! I passed out flyers for MAss Peace Actions conference on 12/3. Planned before the election result t'he title says it all : The Next Four Years - building our movements in dangerous times. ". Speakers representing racial and social justice economic and climate justice peace and electoral and democracy organizing our our speakers. In the afternoon there will be a panel of movement intersection which is desperately needed. People responded with enthusiasm!! It's at Simmons - 9 to 5 - young people who are members in these movements are free. Can't put the link here but it's definitely on the web at Peace Action.

Hi, Su! I spent some time over the past several days talking with the organizer of the Newton event, and I was confident that it would be good. Glad to hear it was!

  • Gravatar

Dear Renee, I appreciate your valid concerns, but I assume most of us were preparing to trek out not to make ourselves feel better or because we think it's a good idea, but in respectful response to very moving and specific calls for action and support, issued directly by leaders at Standing Rock. More respect, thoughtful language and deep listening all around would be a good idea, moving forward.

  • Gravatar

My understanding is that as allies we need to be cognizant that the actions at Standing Rock are acts of sovereignty, with major implications and consequences for other people, not us and that as allies we need to be willing to take leadership and direction from Native folks and look in ourselves and to our own community to raise discussion about white supremacy and the reality that our government needs to honor its treaty(ies), (in this cae Fort Laramie), not do what it wants - in our name - taking anything it wants and brutalizing anyone who gets in its way - it is not about this particular action and our urgency to feel better, our need to act and act now regardless because we think it is a good idea; this is about a way of life and our need to change and work for real systemic cultural paradigm change- in ourselves and in how our government operates..
it’s time for all of us to rise up and play a role in THIS fight.

Although this complicates plans for many of us, (including those who won't be able to attend next week) it does give us more time to circulate petitions, study up on non-violence, and make even more beautiful "WATER IS LIFE" "_____STANDS WITH STANDING ROCK" and "NO DAPL" banners. It also gives us the chance to join or organize support-actions closer to home (or hopefully join one organized by local tribes). sorry to add yet another email!

  • Gravatar

Thank you for your patient leadership, Marla. I do hope that a time can be found that can include those of us from faith communities who have Sunday commitments, but I know that no time works for everyone.

  • Gravatar

This is being organized in a good and honorable way with respect for Native leadership. I am totally onboard with developing the relationships and being patient.

  • Gravatar

Very well said, Marla, that is. Sorry everybody for one more email...

  • Gravatar

Very well said. A lot of empathy and patience right now will go a long way. It's difficult but necessary. Difficult because this pipeline issue is urgent, but necessary because a long term relationship building the trust is also important. I hold gratitude for the leaders and send positive thoughts.

Elaborate discussion about process is where political action goes to die.

    • Gravatar

it would be nice to just click "like"

    • marla marcum
      marla marcum Event Creator

Friends, the only "elaborate discussion about process" that's happening is my attempt to help almost 800 people understand what's happening here and to convey why it's important for a 95% white crowd of people to slow down and listen to, work with, and honor the leadership of local Native communities when we are responding to a call to stand up for Standing Rock, which is 1,500 miles away... I can only imagine the pain I would feel if I had been fighting for my community for generations, mostly ignored by and invisible to the majority of my neighbors... and then suddenly, masses of those people started rising up to support a community like mine so far away... particularly if they were still ignoring the fact that I exist.

If we are only going to respond to Native leadership at Standing Rock, it would be easy for our local Native communities to assume that we are only responding because we care about fighting pipelines (and that we don't really care much about the broader and deeper injustices in which we are complicit if we stay silent). We need to care about these relationships. We need to care about these people.

So this time, a number of white climate leaders in the Boston area are saying that it is appropriate to slow down and build good relationships. It's one week. The DAPL situation is urgent, but it's not our last fight.

The kind of political action that I think most of us want to see has not succeeded for the past generation precisely because we have not taken the time to build these relationships, and so we continue to allow our differences to divide us.

I am at least as impatient about the need to act as you are. I am checking myself in order to listen to people who we as a movement haven't really made time to listen to. That's not an elaborate discussion about process. It's respect.

    • Gravatar

While I am as impatient with endless process as the next person (and likely more so), I respect Marla's care and trust her leadership. It's more important to get this right than to do it fast. Speed kills.

    • Gravatar

I totally agree with what Marla says

I am standing with Marla and want to make this public, despite complaints about too many posts here, because this is such an important issue

    • Gravatar

The point of the conference on 12/3 at Simmons is to learn to work together so the movements of climate and social justice can strengthen each other - especially right now in MA. Maybe one result can be a way to spread the word of demonstrations from one site! Here's the site to register for it - bit.ly/next4yrs

      Sheila, that's a Tuesday, and it's tentative.

EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE: every time you post on this discussion board, most of the other 700 people who RSVPed get an email notification. FOR EVERY POST. Please be mindful of this. If you have a question that everybody might not need to see (especially if you think you are pointing out a mistake), please email me directly. marla.marcum@gmail.com

So please post. But please also think first about whether your post belongs on the discussion board or in my inbox. Thanks to all of you for your attentiveness to this important work!

  • Gravatar

Marla, can you comment on the time of the event on the 20th? Your email says 12:00 AM. Did you mean PM instead of AM? Thanks for your "fierce love" and heartfelt guidance on this important work.

Please understand that those are total placeholders. I had to put some specific date and time in order to keep the page up as an action so we can all keep communicating. I expect something in that week. The timing given is meant to emphasize the fact that it has not yet been decided. At all.

Folks, discussion board is open. It seems that if you unsubscribe from getting emails when people post here, you'll be unsubscribed from automatically generated emails. I'll still have your name and information on the RSVP list, but Action Network won't email you, and I can't see who has unsubscribed, so I can't proactively update you separately.

If you Unsubscribe and want to have access to updates, you'll need to visit the action page at https://actionnetwork.org/events/nodapl-solidarity-action-3

  • Gravatar

Is there someone on this discussion thread who is able to tell me how to remove myself from this thread to thwart the copious amount of emails clogging my inbox?

      marla marcum Event Creator

      Yep!

CLICK UNSUBSCRIBE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE EMAIL that has the updates in it. This thread has that answer in it several times!

This will take you off Discussion Board updates, but it will NOT remove you from the RSVP list, so you'll still get email updates from organizers.

Somewhere here on this list, maybe yesterday, detailed instructions were given. I sent them to my friend who is driving and will post here again = but later, I have to go out now. I was planning on coming but not sure what is going on. Is it possible to create a Facebook group. This format is very confusing for me. I keep seeing there will be updates and directions?

  • Gravatar

I'm going to Concord from Northborough. Anyone want to carpool?

  • Paul Garver

I completely agree with Amy. I had considered unsubscribing because the traffic on this list is so voluminous that it is swamping all other mails, and there seems to be no way to control the volume of emails from this list by any other means.

I moderate a number of Google and Facebook groups, and these provide several alternatives, both to opt how to receive emails, and to direct a message to only one or a few list members instead of to all on the list.

Perhaps the Action Network is already considered how to fix this problem, since the website is currently under repair.

  • Gravatar

There is an email circulating from UU mass action that the event is off until the following week when it is better organized. That email went out at 9:40 am.
Any truth to this? It did say there would still be a protest at Newton City Hall.

    • Gravatar

Rescheduled? I though this "day of action" is part of a broader call to action happening across the country on the 15th? There seems to be plenty of people on this board who would be willing to help organize including myself - not sure if that's the issue?

I saw that leadership would be sending an update this afternoon so will stay tuned for that.

    • Gravatar

      I thought so too. Confused.

  • Gravatar

is there a way to only get a daily digest of this discussion board? The volume of emails is a bit overwhelming

    • Gravatar

Yes - how do we get a daily digest?

    • Marc Osten
    • Gravatar

that only lets you unsubscribe. It's a shame, because I bet a lot of people are going to be as annoyed by this as I am and unsubscribe, when they could be kept in the conversation instead.

    • Gravatar

If folks decide to unsubscribe due to volume of emails you need to reassess your role in this action. People lives are under attack in this country and the least we can do as accomplices is to sift through email. Lets keep this in perspective please

    • Marc Osten

I agree with the sentiment but Whew - That is rather harsh. Please ... peaceful constructive language. Lets meet people who want to be active in a way that meets their needs also.

If someone unsubscribes they can still go to the site every day to get an update.

    • Gravatar

That's so silly!! Being dedicated to the cause and wanting to stay up to date but have fewer emails in ones' in box are two very different things. The discussion board options are not well designed. People have to reply to the whole board rather than an individual, and they can't get a digest.

  • Gravatar

Believe there's strength in numbers & we need to take this directly to the folks who can change the route - that's why I'm driving from Concord NH to Concord MA to USACOE NE headquarters.

  • marla marcum
    marla marcum Event Creator

Folks, we'll be sending out an update email with details around noon today. Thanks for your patience and your passion!!

    • Gravatar

Thank you. Those details will be pertaining to Concord only is that correct? This chain of responses seem to be going in several different directions

    • Gravatar

Hi Marla, perhaps a silly question, but will there be directions in the update? I saw them before, but they are lost in the emails. I know how to get to the air base, but it looked like it was a bit tricky to find the protest site.

    • Gravatar

Where is the update email? I did not get it?

  • Gravatar

Makes sense; it's what I figured but wanted to throw out there for other ideas and info. Huge numbers make a statement.

  • Gravatar

    hello there.

just my opinion, but there is strength in numbers, and while it is great that there are many different venues to show our solidarity and support at; having a strong powerful presence at hanscom air force base where the number of supporters can't be ignored or brushed off as just a handful of people would be great. understand that some folks simply can't get to hanscom and the other venues are great too, but if you can make it. am looking forward to standing in support with all of you.

  • Gravatar

Hello All, not sure if my previous response went through...

The other events in MA, according to an email I received from the Daily Kos, are as follows:

    Newton City Hall
    1000 Commonwealth Ave
    Newton, MA 02459

    Dock Square
    Main St
    Rockport, MA 01966

    Bank of America
    365 Main St
    Worcester 01608

    • Gravatar

Thanks. I guess I have to read my Daily Kos more carefully. I will google to see if I can find more details re Newton

    • Gravatar

Hi Sheila, Newton works best for me too. I am leaving from Arlington. Is it still on Tuesd. Nov. 15?
      Gerda

  • Gravatar

Thank you, Marc! The original route of this pipeline would have impacted white people. This is a continuation of the genocide that started in 1492 - not to mention, another broken treaty. Sad that Barack Obama has not stopped this.

  • Gravatar

    Where in Worcester?

  • Gravatar

I see that there are events regarding this issue also in Newton, Rockport and Worcester, MA. Would it be better to have an even distribution all around or concentrate our efforts in Concord? I can also go to Newton Town Hall.

    • Gravatar

Where in Newton and when? A google search just now came up with nothing. Thx

  • Gravatar

Marc Osten, I totally completely utterly agree with you. Thank you for posting

  • Marc Osten

I very much look forward to this event, am thankful for the organizing energy put in and have publicized it widely. It will be very difficult for me however to be part of the event without the tone and message of the event focusing ***** first ***** on acknowledgment the racist elements of this battle. If there is a collective message being shared with the local Army Corps of Engineers office it is necessary to incorporate language suggested by native American activists. Those activists tell us:

"Please remind people that our people are struggling to survive the violence of colonization on many fronts, and that people shouldn’t simply engage with or retweet such stories when they see a concrete connection to their own issues — or a jumping off point to discuss their own issues. Our friends, allies and accomplices should be fighting alongside us because they value our humanity and right to live, in addition to whatever else they believe in."

    • marla marcum
      marla marcum Event Creator

Marc, stay tuned... we have not been widely promoting this event (though the national orgs have) because we are working with local Native leaders to ensure that this event does just what you suggest. White folks need to hold one another accountable, and we also need to ask questions of one another instead of assuming ignorance of these commitments and concerns.

    • Marc Osten

Thank you. Native America leaders are also asking us to put our bodies on the line. Will there by non-violent civil disobediance action as part of this effort.

    • Gravatar

Yes, Marc and all, I have the same question. I asked that question also days ago. At the gathering at AIM in JP there were many of us who were interested in this and met as a group for a very short time. Emily Kirkland was writing down names and emails etc I am very interested in non-violent civil disobedience as part of this effort and have a very long history in it. I am wondering if this was discussed in the planning. I could not be on the planning committee, but trusted our voices would be heard there since we were part of the gathering at AIM. Thanks

    • Gravatar

Completely agree, Marc! I think the message for this action should directly be informed and guided by the people of Standing Rock. The rights of our Native American brothers and sisters have been destroyed and ignored and we need to stand as their allies here because it is plainly wrong. It is the first and most essential of the message being delivered.

    • marla marcum
      marla marcum Event Creator

Sheila, the leaders empowered at that meeting at the North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB) – Emily and Carl – agreed that it would be important to gather a small group of Native leadership, non-Native people of color leadership, and white leaders representing groups who support direct action to begin the planning (to maintain some balance of representation of communities). We are about to loop you all in. This process is slow because we are at the beginning of building relationships, and we intend to prioritize that over this particular timescale because we need to support and care for each other for the long term.

  • Gravatar

    A Ho, very important share

  • Marc Osten

*** VERY IMPORTANT - Here is the way the Native Americans at Standing Rock want us to talk about the pipeline. The text below comes from: (https://transformativespaces.org/2016/10/27/how-to-talk-about-nodapl-a-native-perspective/In)

"Too few people have started from a place of naming that we have a right to defend our water and our lives, simply because we have a natural right to defend ourselves and our communities. When “climate justice”, in a very broad sense, becomes the center of conversation, our fronts of struggle are often reduced to a staging ground for the messaging of NGOs.

This is happening far too frequently in public discussion of #NoDAPL.

Yes, everyone should be talking about climate change, but you should also be talking about the fact that Native communities deserve to survive, because our lives are worth defending in their own right — not simply because “this affects us all.”

So when you talk about Standing Rock, please begin by acknowledging that this pipeline was redirected from an area where it was most likely to impact white people. And please remind people that our people are struggling to survive the violence of colonization on many fronts, and that people shouldn’t simply engage with or retweet such stories when they see a concrete connection to their own issues — or a jumping off point to discuss their own issues. Our friends, allies and accomplices should be fighting alongside us because they value our humanity and right to live, in addition to whatever else they believe in.

    Folks,
The people who are going to attend next weeks (Tuesday 15th) rally at the USACE NE offices.
To get there remember it is part of the "Hanscom Airbase", off rte 128/95 ring road at exit 30, exit north or south onto Rte 2 A West Bound towards Hanscom AFB - about 1/2 mile make a right onto "Hanscom Drive" , keep to the left onto Old Bedford Rd west - it turns into Virginia Rd. Proceed about 1/2 mile till you see "Rectrix Aviation" on the right and "Hanscom Federal Credit Union" on the left.
At the intersection make a left and keep Right and drive around to the rear of the Credit Union where the NE USACE HQ building is - do not drive left when you come off Virginia Rd as it is a dead end and NO PARKING for the USACE bldg.
I am not sure if USACE will be aware of the number of Folks turning up around mid day? So we should be respectful where everyone parks, as the USACE facility does have quite a few outside visitors/engineers who need to come and go.
The road running up to the USACE HQ does have some no parking signs in a few places and the Airport security police "will tow" and retrieval is quite a way away from the Airbase. There is some parking the other side of Draper Labs just past Rectrix Aviation, on the right just past Draper Labs in an empty office parking area about 200 yds. You can walk down Fuller Lane and across the grass onto the road by the the Credit Union leading to the USACE HQ [do not go down Dunbar as you will have to climb a bank and push through a hedge fence, stay on Fuller Lane]

Lets make it a respectful and peaceful gathering and listen to the organizers directions, so no one point fingers at the gathering as being rowdy and disrespectful for our representing the Standing Rock Nation and there need for our assistance in getting the pipeline rerouted from there sacred burial grounds and water source. By letting the USACE know our feelings express calmly.

Here are some thoughts/idea for consideration in being presented to the representative of USACE: -
    A) Where are the EPA impact statements for the Pipeline required by Law.
    B) how come the permits were issued without any open public comment period or open meetings along the routes planned to be used- is against public law.
    C) Move the pipeline route well away from the Standing Rock Nations lands borders by at least three miles .
    D) Any water/stream crossings including wetlands must be carried in an enclosed tunnel capable of containing any possible spill/break and can the line be shut down quicker than 5 minutes?
    E) Where is the mandated incident document and preparation Protocols for an incident- protocol/report, also required by law and approved by the USACE/EPA and BLM?
    E) what is the Pipeline maintenance schedule of inspection and expected life from corrosion/wear and tear?
The above are several of my thoughts that have also been given to the state of Montana USACE/EPA/BLM and mentioned in various engineering newsletters comments-= I will be putting several of the above in a letter to the NE Commander.
Add more questions ideas/suggestion and so when given to USACE it also includes a request for a written response to an address. Put into an addressed envelope signed and address to USACE, so they can respond too (they have a max of 30 days to reply by law when such correspondence is officially received and signed by an inquirer.)

Look forward to a good and informative/peaceful rally.

PS: would anyone want a pipeline through the Arlington national memorial cemetery for the defenders of the USA, of course NO. The same applies to the Standing Rock Nations sacred burial grounds.

will there be an opportunity to present letters or petitions?

    • Gravatar

Will this be taking away from any potential presence of numbers in Concord which is what the original intent of this discussion board was? Thank you.

    • Gravatar

The question I now have because some have turned this into a racial event is: Would any "natives" stand against that pipeline at Arlington since its in "white" territory?

  • Gravatar

Right now there is a 60% chance of rain so I'm trying to figure out how to waterproof a poster board sign. Any ideas?

    • Gravatar

Use some food plastic wrap or buy a roll of clear plastic and make a bag to slip over your poster- go to Lowes or Home Depot for the roll of plastic or a super market for the food wrap.

    • Gravatar

      Thank you!

    • Gravatar

I have some water-proof paints, markers and banner material I hope to suspend from a bamboo pole (hope poles are permitted) Do we have any dedicated photographers, or are we counting on media coverage?

    • Gravatar

often recycled bags (ie from cleaners) work well.

    • Gravatar

In the event of rain, painting with acrylic paint on contrasting color umbrellas is also good (ie white on black)

    • Gravatar

Harriet Karim - Brilliant! Let's use the rain water to help make us heard!

Deborah, I'd love to ride with you and staying for two hours is fine.

Looks like there are plenty of bus routes near the Belmont/Camb/Arlington line - please give me an address, and a departure time, and I'll be there!

Friends, this event page is for an event happening in Concord, MA next Tuesday. If you want to talk about GOING TO STANDING ROCK here, that's great, but please specify that. Some people are offering rideshare to the event in Concord, and some people are talking about travel to Standing Rock. It's a bit confusing!

  • Gravatar

I'm flying into Bismarck on the 22nd

    • Marc Osten

Hi Claire - Can you contact me directly about your trip out to Biz. 41three-2zero7-28two9, marc.osten at gmail dot com

  • Gravatar

I'm driving from North of Boston (Reading MA) if anyone needs a ride!

  • Gravatar

    Hi,
I will be driving from the Belmont/Cambridge/Watertown line and happy to drive people though I can only stay 2 hours. Just let me know if you need a ride.

  • Gravatar

I understand that there is an online ride board but if I need to rent a car I will, I am coming out with medical supplies and fabric and string for prayer bundles. I have reached out to my colleagues who are supporters of the cause, and the Waters. I am trained in several modalities and have registered with the medics as a volunteer. I just have not found clear guidelines online as to the mundane aspects of getting there, etc.

  • Gravatar

I just signed in & then saw that it starts at noon. I'm a schoolteacher, so can't get there till mid-afternoon. Is that a problem?

    • Gravatar

Good question! I'm interested too in how long this event will be and what to expect...I was thinking of pulling my kids (8 and 10) out of school to be apart of this...

    • Gravatar

Also interested in timing...can't be there until 6 PM but I'm afraid that might be too late to participate.

  • Gravatar

Tho I would love to go to Standing Rock, I was talking about collaborating on travel plans for the demonstration in Concord on Tuesday. Anyone driving from Brookline, Boston or Cambridge?

    • Gravatar

      Hello

Judy I need to go Neville for a caregiving meeting for my mother at noon, bu tI will go to Concord for the action as soon as the meeting is over...I will drive myself, but it would be neat to meet you because I think I live near you...I live near Holworthy Street. My number is 617-492-3352.

    • Gravatar

I might be interested if there's still room-- checking out options from the Cape or from Coolidge Corner, but could take the T or 66 bus to meet up

    Im flying out to ND

    • Gravatar

Just opened this email as I never usually 'chat' in this medium - this issue is different. Just asking: Claire, are you flying out to Standing Rock with plans in place (wondering because of your following entry)? You may know by now that it probably will not be helpful to 'just show up'. Where will you sleep, how will you eat, etc? Asking how to get to the camp leads me to think you're not renting a car? Please go prepared, in all regards, as I'm sure you want to support, not be another mouth to feed. The encampment needs donations of all kind - food, medical supplies. Bring money to donate. Please be in a position to give/share as you join the movement. Google or go to sacredstonecamp.org for good info. Good luck, Jane

    • Gravatar

Where are you flying into?? I tried calling and NA

  • Gravatar

I would love to know of any carpooling or busing plans from Boston asap... Probably won't have car available.

  • Gravatar

I want to go out "Thanksgiving "
Week but am unsure how to actually get to the camp Any advice? Planning I should do?

  • Gravatar

I'm back from Standing Rock. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

  • Gravatar

Seconding what Mary said. And we can be peaceful and prayerful now as we plan and prepare, too. Our brothers and sisters in ND are holding that attitude even while experiencing violence. We can certainly stay heart-centered here as we act in solidarity

  • Gravatar

In planning let's remember that the water protectors are peaceful and prayerful. We should carry that spirit forward in our action.

Friends, If you RSVP'ed to this action, you should have a new email from me, but I wanted to put the text of it here. Please read!

    Friends!

We're getting lots of questions about logistics and other matters for the action at the Army Corps of Engineers New England District office in Concord, MA next Tuesday, November 15th.

Please be patient. Folks organizing this event are working to make sure that we not only heed the call from Standing Rock (coming from Indigenous Environmental Network and Honor the Earth and their allies), but also prioritize the voices and leadership of local Native communities.

We know that you need more details in order to join this action, and I know from the many messages I have received directly that dozens of you are ready to put in some time and effort in advance of the event to help with the organizing, planning, and logistics. We also know that time is short.
    Ok
But with an election tomorrow and another #noDAPL solidarity action in Boston on Wednesday (Facebook for Nov 9th event here), our earliest opportunity for a planning meeting is this Thursday.

I'll send out an email as soon as we have more details about logistics and the plan for action. Thank you all for your commitment to showing up in solidarity and for your understanding that doing so requires slowing down and listening (even though there is a national day of action in just a week)!

    Fierce Love!

    -Marla

Would love to hear from the organizers re timing, transportation and other details. Is there any plan for respectful, nonviolent civil disobedience? Any plan to present petions and letters? The fact that this office is in Concord offers a special opportunity to salute the spirit of Concord citizen Henry David Thoreau (famed naturalist and writer who not only celebrated the spirit of living water in his extraordinary book WALDEN, but also pioneered the practice of civil disobedience). 2017 marks Thoreau's 200th birthday.

      marla marcum Event Creator

we'll let you know soon, but handmade, readable, on-message signs are welcome at just about any action!

  • Gravatar

I made a Facebook group for it because there wasn't one when I looked

      marla marcum Event Creator

Amanda, please see your email and Facebook direct messages from me. We didn't have a facebook event page up yet for some specific reasons.

  • Gravatar

I am new also, I just want to know if there is any kind of infrastructure in place that can help visitors get to the site in ND from the nearest airport....?

    • Gravatar

The plan I had with a friend was to drive the short distance from Bismark. But that was early September before military presence.

This event is November 15th in Concord, MA. For information about how to get to Standing Rock and participate on the ground there, check out http://sacredstonecamp.org/faq/

  • Gravatar

Betsy, If anyone thinks that by causing a commotion that leads to public civil disobedience to get attention, then do not bother to attend. Go make some other noise else were!
This approach and causing hysteria is not the way, to get USACE to listen to sensible solutions [there are currently 3 or 4 ways around the Standing Rock Nations tribal lands and desecration of there grave sites and water rights]. It just gets there hackles up and the Standing Rock Nation loses. The NEW USACE Commandeer is open to good clear dialogue and suggestions, which if we are all respectful, will be passed on to the USACE office covering this pipeline mess, due to poor lack of due diligence and proper oversight of the Environmental impact statements done by the pipeline company.

So keep in mind this is part of a huge day, around the New England area; to show solidarity for the Standing Rock Nation and not to disrupt the needed calm required. Remember the BOSTON TV media will be present and so we need to show our best and not be labeled as thugs, stupid people or disruptive just to get attention, around the nation, in the evening news or breaking news.
Remember also the opening of the constitutions preamble- "WE the PEOPLE". So all elected and governmental officials work for "WE the PEOPLE and not big business or special interests or paid LOBBYIST.
All the more reason for clear and calm minds on the 15th at the USACE offices at Hanscom Air Base.

    • Gravatar

Thank you geoff. Can you answer the other questions. I just joined today but I'm getting emails asking me questions but I'm not the organizer.

    • Gravatar

Geoff, I agree completely as to the need for being peaceful and respectful.

  • Gravatar

I want to come but I work until 4:30. Will this go long enough for me to come?

    • marla marcum
      marla marcum Event Creator

Amanda, we'll have a good answer to this question by the end of this week.

  • Gravatar

Any idea what the end time of this event will be?
    Thanks,
    Judith Glixon

  • Gravatar

I trust that there will be opportunity to participate for those of us who can't resist arrest because of probation restrictions.

    • marla marcum
      marla marcum Event Creator

Who said anything about arrests? Planning team coming together (folks are welcome to join it)... no matter what the final design of the action is, there will be ample opportunities for protest that does not risk arrest.

    • Gravatar

      I'd join the planning team.

    • Marc Osten

Many of the events around the world will include nonviolent direct action. Can you clarify a bit more what the tactics are that you desire people to prioritize or only take.
