Start: Saturday, October 05, 201910:00 AM

End: Saturday, October 05, 2019 6:00 PM

Interested in being part of nonviolent direct actions led by Extinction Rebellion? OR for another group? This training is for those who might risk arrest as well as those who do not plan to do so. The training is necessary for all participants in XR civil disobedience actions.

Join us in Ithaca for comprehensive training in advance of the October Extinction Rebellion. There is a suggested donation of $5 to participate in the training, toward the cost of space and resources, but no one will be turned away if they're unable to make a donation.

About the Training

The Trainers

We are community activists who have been studying nonviolence and have planned, initiated, and participated in civil resistance actions for 40+ years. We are committed to the power of nonviolent direct action (NVDA) to change peoples’ hearts and to expose the forces that threaten to harm and destroy our communities, our rights, and our beloved planet. We are called to this work and are committed to voting with our bodies, taking to the streets, and removing our cooperation with injustice.

What we offer

We offer training in preparation for nonviolent direct action. Our workshops offer the opportunity for individuals and groups to consider and deepen their understanding of nonviolence, to consider resistance to injustice in the form of direct action or civil resistance, and offer tools and strategies to work with expected and unexpected events.

How we train

We design our workshops to be as participatory as possible and we attempt to honor the wisdom of participant experience. We can personalize our training for the specific needs of the attendees. Sometimes we can anticipate this ahead of time and design the workshop accordingly. We can also adjust and respond to the needs of the group as they are revealed during a workshop.

Our training goals are…

  1. To introduce participants to the history and theory of NVDA as an introduction to NVDA social change movements
  2. To offer NVDA as a way of engaging with community, authority, and government when those bodies are seen as corrupt or unjust
  3. To provide specific tools for engaging in NVDA

Our basic training agenda includes exercises and role plays that address the following topics…

  1. community building
  2. history and philosophy of nonviolence
  3. consensus decision making
  4. direct action tactics
  5. legal ramifications of NVDA
  6. affinity group formation and roles
This is an all day commitment. Please arrive on time and stay for the full training.
Please bring your own lunch.

The training has a maximum capacity of 40 and we may have to set up a waitlist if interest exceeds the space available. If you register and later cannot attend, please let us know as soon as possible. Contact Jon at jonroth15@protonmail.com with cancellations or questions.
