November 2-3 Just Transition Retreat on Gas Phase Down Messaging

Clean Air is convening a 1.5 day retreat on Thursday November 2 from 1-4 and Friday November 3 from 10-4 to hold a “brave space” conversation about the phase down of methane/natural/fossil gas within a Just Transition framework and to develop convincing messaging for the general public.

Snacks will be provided on the first day, and lunch and snacks on the second.

Childcare, translation, and interpretation services will be made available if requested through this registration form by Friday 10/27.

WNY has some surprisingly close and unique connections to the use of methane gas - one of the miracles Father Baker is associated with, for example, was discovering a gas well! Residents also are understandably concerned about how this phase down might impact them personally, both financially as well as logistically, especially in the wake of the Christmas Blizzard less than a year ago. National Fuel is also one of the larger industries in our region, and a leading national provider of methane gas.

At the same time, we understand that a just transition away from the use of fossil fuels, including methane gas, is absolutely necessary for both environmental justice, public health, and to prevent the worst case scenarios of climate change.

This is not an easy conversation to hold but we are hoping that by bringing together stakeholders of different backgrounds we can not only come to consensus on shared concerns but also develop some shared talking points to counter industry propaganda, which will help us push our legislators to fully fund a Just Transition and better communicate to the residents of WNY not only how this transition will take place, but also the need for their voices to be heard by their legislators for to fund this work.
