NYC Rally for Relief: Extend and Expand PUA!

Start: Wednesday, August 05, 202012:00 PM

Join the NYC DSA Restaurant Organizing Project for a rally and march starting in Times Square at 12pm on August 5th, part of the national Restaurant Workers United Day of Action.

We'll be rallying and then marching to Senator Schumer's office to demand that our federal and state legislators expand and extend PUA! Wear black, wear a mask, and bring an umbrella, a sign, and a friend!

-Extend the $600 - not less, not later, NOW!

-Expand unemployment benefits to all, regardless of immigration status.

-Hazard Pay - extra pay for extra risk.

The Federal unemployment benefits included in the CARES Act have expired. The $600 weekly checks have been a lifeline to 32 million working class people in the United States who now face extreme uncertainty. Will the benefits be lowered to $200 a week? Will Congress come to a decision before their August 7th recess? Will we be able to pay for our most basic necessities like food, housing and utilities?

$600 is the bare minimum that allows working class people to live. This is why we demand the extension of the $600, not less, not later.

We know that millions of people who should be receiving these benefits are ineligible. Expand the unemployment benefits to all - regardless of immigration status.

Two-thirds of those receiving the federal unemployment benefits are currently making more than they did at their jobs. It is unacceptable that there are people being forced to work in ‘essential jobs’ for poverty wages. Therefore, every worker on the job should be receiving hazard pay - extra pay for extra risk.

This day of action was called by a national group of restaurant workers. While our industry is overrepresented in the unemployed numbers, we know that this is affecting workers across industries. We invite all unemployed workers and organizations who support the demands of the unemployed to join this call.

The unemployment crisis is just beginning, it is going to be a defining feature of life for the foreseeable future. We must get organized because our lives depend on it.
