Organizing for Socialist Feminism: Taking Action in Our Communities

Start: 2022-09-27 20:30:00 UTC Eastern Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-04:00)

This is a virtual event

In the aftermath of Roe v. Wade being overturned just months ago, it remains clear that this is only the beginning of the fight. Against precedent and popular opinion, the Supreme Court’s decision has been decades in the making, and it will continue to make political moves to police people’s bodies through homophobic and transphobic erosions of our rights. Justice Thomas, in his concurring opinion, explicitly stated that this should serve as new precedent to undo other landmark cases like Obergefell v. Hodges, which established the constitutional right to gay marriage.

Already, we are seeing the consequences of this anti-democratic decision. Young girls around the country are being told they are not mature enough to receive an abortion, but are mature enough to raise a child. Others of all ages, particularly working class people, are unable to access abortion services across multiple bordering states, let alone their own. And without pause, the GOP is now moving to target trans people, barring them from necessities like healthcare in a dubious claim to be "protecting" women and children.

In this pressing historic moment, how can feminists continue to fight for and expand reproductive rights? In one of the states with the most liberal abortion rights, what reproductive needs are still not being met and rights still not secured? And how does a socialist lens help us connect feminist work with broader democratic movements while ensuring that all who have stake in this fight are part of it?

Join Mid-Hudson Valley DSA’s Political Education Working Group on Zoom, Tuesday 9/27 at 8:30 pm for a discussion on socialist feminism in action, including why socialism and feminism complement each other. We'll briefly look at an analysis of feminism as it relates to race and class - past and present - then examine the particular needs of our communities and how to concretely address them alongside those already leading the fight.

All are welcome to join, share their experiences, and help build an unstoppable socialist feminist movement that won't back down. RSVP for Zoom link.

*NOTE* - This event was previously scheduled for 9/6 and has been postponed to 9/27.
