OWNED: A TALE OF TWO AMERICAS | Housing Justice Film Screening in Middletown
Start: Tuesday, September 26, 2023• 6:30 PM
OWNED: A TALE OF TWO AMERICAS is the first film shown in Middletown as a part of the Housing Justice Film Series hosted by Connecticut DSA & cosponsored by Wesleyan Union of Student Employees (WesUSE). Join us on Tuesday, September 26th at 6:30pm for a screening & discussion on housing, segregation, & gentrification. How is the current so-called housing crisis rooted in postwar U.S. housing policy? How exactly did for-profit housing and racism shape the reality we live in today? How can understanding our own experiences in this bigger history help us organize more effectively for housing justice? The screening will be followed by an open discussion addressing all of these questions, as well as how we can join together in ongoing organizing efforts for housing justice here in Connecticut.

From the website for OWNED:“The United States’ postwar housing policy created the world’s largest middle class. It also set America on two divergent paths -- one of imagined wealth, propped up by speculation and endless booms and busts, and the other in systematically defunded, segregated communities, where “the American dream” feels hopelessly out of reach.
Owned is a fever dream vision into the dark history behind the US housing economy. Tracking its overtly racist beginnings and its unbridled commoditization, the film exposes a foundational story that few Americans understand as their own.”
