Trans, queer, and gender-nonconforming people - and gender nonconformity in general - have long been a target of far-right violence. Over the past year, the right has mounted an increasingly aggressive campaign, with different factions of it targeting queer nightclubs, children's hospitals, and drag queen story hours. Boston DSA has been helping local drag performers and queer activists keep the community safe.

In December, approximately 25 members of a neo-Nazi group amassed outside the Fall River Public Library and attempted to disrupt Drag Story Time, as did a separate organization of bro-fascists. Members of Boston DSA and other community groups provided security for the event. The neo-Nazis rushed the library steps, assaulting and injuring multiple chapter members. Thanks to these volunteers, the neo-Nazis were unable to enter the library. Drag Story Time happened smoothly. None of the children, families, or performers were assaulted, and families were able to get escorts to their cars from friendly volunteers.

This is the second time the Fall River Pride Committee’s Drag Story Time has been targeted by the organized far right. Both times, members of Boston DSA have protected the queer community and the library as a whole.

The Fall River Pride Committee’s next Drag Story Time is scheduled for January 14. They have called for as many people as possible to attend a fun, festive, affirming rally in support of queer identity and Fall River trans and queer communities, and to make it much more difficult for right-wing activists to disrupt Drag Story Time. There is safety in numbers - higher turnout means lower risk!

Please join us in front of the Fall River Public Library. There will be rainbows, performances, and Pride.
