Raise the Minimum Wage Public Hearing at State Capitol

Start: Thursday, February 11, 201612:45 PM

While the U.S. economy continues to see steady growth, real wages are declining for the average U.S. worker – particularly for those in low-wage occupations. This dynamic has prompted a national conversation around income inequality and created momentum for efforts to raise the minimum wage to a more meaningful level.

No longer just a rallying cry, since 2014 the call for a $15 wage has spread to a growing number of jurisdictions – including major cities and states.

Despite progress being made across the nation to raise wages, Georgia's minimum wage is still at $5.15 an hour, among the 4 lowest states in the USA.

The good news is that the Senate Insurance & Labor committee has agreed to hold a hearing on 2 new pieces of legislations related to the minimum wage:

1) SB 292 would repeal the preemption of local cities being able to set a minimum wage in their own jursidictions -- http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/en-US/display/20152016/SB/292

2) SB 293 would raise the minimum wage to $15/hr - http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/en-US/display/20152016/SB/293
