Reclaiming Our State: Power to the Polls
Start: Saturday, January 20, 2018•12:00 PM
End: Saturday, January 20, 2018• 4:00 PM
One year after the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, women and allies will once again come together -- this time to galvanize voters ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
This Saturday, January 20th, Women’s March on Washington - Indiana will host Reclaiming Our State: Power to the Polls. The event will begin at noon at American Legion Mall, with speakers from organizations such as Indy 10 Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood, and Spencer Pride.
Afterward, attendees with march through downtown Indianapolis to the Indiana State House to hear from additional speakers, including local Dreamers; Heather Wildrick-Holman, president of the Indiana chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW); and State Representative Robin Shackleford, Vice Chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus. The remarks will conclude with our keynote, Dr. Demetrees Hutchins, PhD. Hutchins is one of the “great eight” group of African American women who made history when they earned Ph.D.s from the Indiana University School of Education in May of 2016.
At the conclusion of the speeches, there will be tabling from merchants, nonprofit organizations, and candidates -- including some of the hundreds of women nationwide who have decided to run for office since the 2016 election. Attendees will also have the opportunity to register to vote and receive information for registering new voters in their own communities.
“To reclaim our state, each of us must continue working in the weeks and months leading up to the 2018 election,” said Savannah Pearlman, media and communications director for Women’s March on Washington - Indiana. “This event is more than a one-day gathering -- it is a way of launching that effort by building on the incredible momentum that began with last year’s march.”
Thousands of women and allies from across the state are expected to attend. Organizers have arranged bus transportation from several statewide locations, including Fort Wayne, Bloomington, Columbus, South Bend, and Lafayette. For a full list and information on staging areas, please click here.
“We decided to come together at the statehouse because that is where so many decisions are made that impact the lives of all Hoosiers,” continued Pearlman. “Our diverse list of speakers will raise awareness about these issues and help inspire action.”
