Redistricting Town Hall

Start: Monday, March 26, 2018 7:00 PM

End: Monday, March 26, 2018 8:30 PM

Fair Districts PA is hosting a town hall with three members of California's Independent Redistricting Commission.

The California process has been a major success, resulting in increased voter turnout and opening the doors to more competitive elections and less-partisan politicians from both parties. The resultant bipartisan cooperation and data-driven solutions have been an important factor in the state's robust economic performance.

Join us to hear three of the commissioners share their experiences.

They'll discuss how the commission was created, how the commissioners  worked toward consensus on maps and the outcome of the process, with ample time for questions.

Stanley Forbes is a co-owner of Avid Reader, an independent retail bookstore.  Mr. Forbes also has spent the last 32 years operating a family ranch. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California, a Master’s degree from UCLA, and a Law Degree from Vanderbilt University. Mr. Forbes is registered as Decline-To-State and lives in Esparto in Yolo County

Gil Ontai is a practicing architect, past campus director, and faculty member at Springfield College. He served as a city redevelopment board director for San Diego’s downtown district and as a city planning commissioner for 8 years.  Ontai graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii and went on to receive his Master’s degree from Washington University in architecture and a doctorate degree in education. Mr. Ontai is registered with the Republican party and lives in the City and County of San Diego.

Jeanne Raya is an Agency Principal with the John L Raya Insurance Agency, a family-owned business established in 1960. Ms. Raya received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southern California, and a Law Degree from UC Davis. She served as President of the California La Raza Lawyers Association, as a member of the California Committee of Bar Examiners, and as President of the San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Raya is a registered Democrat and lives in the City of San Gabriel in Los Angeles County.

The commissioners will be joined by Representative Steve Samuelson, one of the primary sponsors of House Bill 722, which would create a similar redistricting commission in Pennsylvania. Rep. Samuelson has been working on this issue since the 2007-2008 legislative session.

Carol Kuniholm, chair of Fair Districts PA, will also be present to share about our progress toward reform.

We'll be in the A180 Auditorium of Widener Law School, Harrisburg. Admission is free and all are welcome but space is limited, so please RSVP.
