This Responsible Futures webinar will be held on Zoom. All students and staff from Responsible Futures partnerships are invited to join.

In this interactive webinar, led by Responsible Futures Host Partnership Manchester Metropolitan University and the Union at Manchester Metropolitan University,  will focus on decolonising curricula as one aspect of building responsible futures.

Decolonising is about identifying and challenging the ways in which colonialism has impacted upon perceived knowledge, learning, and society. It requires us to acknowledge, reflect upon, and address the legacy of disadvantage, injustice and racism arising from historic global domination by the ‘west’. Decolonisation seeks to recognise and re-balance this legacy within education by integrating a much wider range of perspectives in what we teach, how we teach, and the wider learning environment in which we teach. The imbalances generated by colonialism are not sustainable, and thus decolonisation can be viewed in the wider framework of sustainable development, and explicitly to many of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Webinar outline

1. Introduction to Decolonising Curricula

An overview of decolonising and its relationship with decarbonising, together with a brief tour of the Decolonising the Curriculum Toolkit developed to support colleagues in Science and Engineering at Manchester Met.

2. Perspectives on Decolonising Curricula

Insightful reflections on decolonising from students (Diary of a BAME Student) and academic colleagues (Stories from Scholars) in Science and Engineering.

3. Action on Decolonising Curricula

An opportunity for small group discussion and feedback around the practicalities of decolonising. How do we raise awareness, motivate and engage people? Practically, what changes can we make to what we teach, how we teach and the wider learning environment?

4. Takeaways for Decolonising Curricula

Examples of adaptations to decolonise curricula, and a bank of ideas to take away.

5. Q and A and Close

Final questions and comments, and a brief opportunity to reflect on your learning from the session.
