Royal Coronation - Demand Democracy

Start: Saturday, May 06, 202312:00 AM

Monarchy is incompatible with democracy. Especially a King that chooses to indulge in pomp and pageantry in the middle of a cost of living crisis that's seen food and heating prices soar and millions suffer. Out of touch, outdated and downright offensive.

It's time for us to join the vast majority of the modern world in choosing a Head of State that is transparent, directly elected by and directly accountable to the public

This is a historic moment. Let's come together to demand democracy. Let's make this the last coronation.

Whether you want to make your voice heard in person or in another way, we've done the work for you - just RSVP to receive easy tips and materials to give you real say. Take back your power.

A number of organisations and groups will be organising pro-democracy action. We support all of them and encourage you to check out their resources and guidance as well as ours.

10 Quick facts:

  • The Monarchy costs an estimated £345m every year to the taxpayer. Democratic Heads of State cost significantly less around the world and therefore are a much better management of public funds.
  • There's no evidence that the royals are good for tourism, this is a myth.
  • There are 54 countries in the Commonwealth, only 16 have the British Monarch as their Head of State. 5 have their own monarchs and the rest are republics. The monarch heads the Commonwealth on paper but a secretariat runs the organisation led by a Secretary General.
  • Whether you view the UK’s history as bringing enlightened, progressive and democratic values to the world or imperialism and colonialism, both views are incompatible with the perpetuation of an undemocratic Head of State.
  • A democratic Head of State that was accountable could foster much greater national cohesion, as well as going some way to resolving legacy issues that the monarchy is directly tied to and still benefits from, like the dividends of imperialism and colonialism. Democracy could engender a new, stronger, more just national identity and spirit.
  • A democratic Head of State would help reform politics more widely due to their independence and important role in checking the power of our politicians which an unelected monarch can’t do.
  • There's no reason we have to have the exact same system as any other particular country. We might decide they should have some powers, like France, or be a ceremonial figure, like Ireland. Whatever system we choose, it will be the person we choose.
  • There's really nothing radical or revolutionary about joining most of the world, including our closest allies, in embracing democracy and a peaceful transfer of power from a single family to we the people. The current Royals would be citizens with the same democratic rights and freedoms as the rest of us and would keep all of their private property and estates.
  • The practicalities of transitioning to democracy are extremely simple. Stamps and money are redesigned regularly. Any laws that refer to the Crown or the Monarch would simply have their wording amended by a single piece of legislation.
  • Support for  a democratic Head of State tends to hover between 20- 30% which is about the same as Brexit or Scottish Independence not so long ago. This increases each generation.
