As many of you know, sanctions are an act of economic warfare. Like many effects of war, they have a disproportionate effect on the innocent civilians of the nations targeted. Especially during this global pandemic, we need to examine the effects these sanctions have on civilian populations, many already marginalized due to lack of food and adequate healthcare.

As talk of ratcheting up sanctions on nations such as Iran and North Korea increases, we will discuss how we can organize and let our representatives know that enough is enough – we need more tools in our diplomatic bag of tricks besides war and sanctions.

Cavan Kharrazian (Researcher @Center for Economic and Policy Research)
Cavan is an Iranian-American researcher at the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, DC, where he has studied humanitarian impacts of US economic sanctions, along with their legal implications both domestically and internationally. Minju Bae (@Nodutdol for Korean Community Development)
Minju is an educator and historian of Asian America. She is a member of Nodutdol for Korean Community Development, a New York City-based organization of diasporic Koreans and comrades that organizes to advance peace, decolonization, and self-determination in Korea and Turtle Island.

Diana Duerte (Director of Policy and Strategic Engagement @MADRE)
Diana is the Director of Policy and Strategic Engagement at MADRE, leading the organization’s policy, public education and communications work, and designing and implementing campaigns to advance women’s human rights. She directs MADRE’s Feminist Foreign Policy Jumpstart initiative, bringing grassroots women’s perspectives and analysis into US policymaking. For more than 14 years, she has worked in policy analysis and communications to advocate for human rights, gender justice, and progressive change. She has served as a board member of Women, Action and the Media: NYC and currently is the board chair of ActionAid USA. https://madre.org

Our speakers will discuss sanctions as a tool of U.S foreign policy and we will then dive in deeper on effects being felt in Iran and N. Korea. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A period and call to action where we will discuss steps we can take after the webinar to effect change.
