City Council Meeting & Vote on Sanctuary City Status

Start: Tuesday, May 08, 2018 5:00 PM

End: Tuesday, May 08, 201810:00 PM

In April, the Santa Clarita City Council began the process to initiate a vote to file an Amicus brief in support of the Orange County lawsuit against California over SB 54, as well as issue a resolution declaring Santa Clarita in opposition of the California Values Act.

On May 8th, the Santa Clarita City Council will discuss the subject and potentially vote to take action.

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM but organizers anticipate high attendance including a large presence from extremist anti-immigrant groups. *** It is important to arrive early if you need a seat or want to speak during the comment period. Written comment cards will be available as well. ***

BACKGROUND:

As a general law city, Santa Clarita has no legal authority to preempt state law. Additionally, as a contract city, Santa Clarita employs the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department for law enforcement services and has no jurisdictional authority to dictate policy or practice to the department. This is especially notable as the department notes that SB 54 is nearly identical to the department's existing policy as per Prop 47, passed in 2014. LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell has also issued statements in support of the final text of the bill.
