Selma
Start: Thursday, January 12, 2017• 6:00 PM
As part of the African-American Pastor Alliance's (AAPA) 3 Day Martin Luther King Jr. Event, Black Lives Matter of Columbus will host Day 1 of the series at Columbus City Hall.
We will be screening the film "Selma" (directed by Ava DuVernay). Following the film, high school students from East and North will express how impactful Martin Luther King Jr. is to each of them. The students will also give their personal accounts on race relations within their schools and how relevant Dr. King’s teachings are today.
Since the BCSC schools will be closed on this national holiday, we encouraged students to join this event and learn more about this important man & pivotal leader.
Movie Description: “This film is the story of a movement. It chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. This film tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.”
