Our ask this week: Protect DREAMers and Defend DACA by co-sponsoring the bipartisan Durbin-Graham “DREAM Act” (S. 1615) to create a legislative fix to the predicament of these young Americans, and take their future out of court challenges and Trump’s hands.
DREAMers are undocumented young adults who were brought into this country as children by their parents. After a sixteen year fight for proper legislation, they were only able to achieve an executive order from President Obama, even though the bill had bipartisan support. The Executive Order gives them "lawful presence" after going through "“biographic and biometric background checks . . . against a variety of databases maintained by the DHS and other federal government agencies.”
But, now Trump wants to revoke it.
20 state attorneys general, led by California’s Xavier Becerra, urged Trump to preserve DACA, saying it had been a “boon” to the economy by allowing students to study and work, becoming soldiers, nurses, church leaders and more.
We will visit Senator Moran's office to ask him to co-sponsor the Durbin-Graham DREAM Act (S. 1615) because "passing a law would avoid the need to have the program survive a court challenge." Or Trump himself.
