Social Justice Unionism Today: Public meeting
  • Monday 16 Sept, 6-7.30pm
  • The Wesley London Euston, 81 - 103 Euston Street, NW1 2EZ
  • Register here
  • Organised by NEU, Strike Map and GFTU
This event takes place during the visit to the NEU of Cecily Myart-Cruz, President of United Teachers of Los Angeles. Cecily, the first Black woman president of the UTLA, has led the union during a period of renewed organising and campaigning. UTLA has secured major victories in this time:
  • a 21% pay rise for teachers
  • housing support for low income families
  • increased school staffing, including psychologists and social workers
These wins have come from a strategy of building member power, forging alliances with students, parents and community groups., and 'bargaining for the common good'.
Cecily will be in conversation about the UTLA strategy with Daniel Kebede and Gawain Little, General Secretary of GFTU and former NEU exec member.

You can read more about the strike Cecily helped lead here, and a short profile of Cecily here.

Speakers include: Cecily Myart-Cruz (President of UTLA), Gawain Little (General Federation of Trade Unions), and Daniel Kebede (NEU).

Sponsored by: General Federation of Trade Unions, Strike Map and the National Education Union
