Solidarity March
Start: Saturday, May 20, 2017• 1:00 PM
End: Saturday, May 20, 2017• 4:00 PM
A
demonstration in solidarity with Womens' rights across the UK, Ireland
and the rest of the world, organised by the team behind the womens'
march held in Manchester on Jan 21st, 2017, of which, 2,000 of the
women, men, families and allies on gtr Manchester took part in. NB This
will be a Pro-Choice solidarity event.
The demonstration
is to open at 1pm with a selection of speakers from different
communities, backgrounds and experiences that all speak of an aspect of
the inequalities faced in the UK + the world today. Following on at 2pm
approx a short procession lead by some of our speakers will do a short
circuit of the area surrounding Albert Square, returning to our starting
point with more speakers / songs /poetry readings.
All women (trans women are women), non-binary, families, male allies and supporters welcome.
Reason:
On May 20th, across the USA and the UK, anti-choice (so called
pro-life) groups are holding gatherings outside clinics that offer
abortion advice and in various other locations to celebrate the rise in
attacks on womens' rights that we have seen increase in recent years.
In the weeks that have followed Jan 21st, we've witnessed: Men being
allowed to return to work after murdering their girlfriends. Rapists
being aquitted of charges because the female victim did not scream (many
people will remain quiet when in a state of intense fear). High numbers
of girls from BAME communities go missing with very low media coverage.
Women being told that their bodies are 'hosts' and that a man should
decide if they are allowed a termination. Women being told 'you should
have known he was going to rape you'. There are more examples, of
course, but you've already read quite a bit now.
If you wish to speak, please get in touch!
