For years, vague preservation rules have been used to stall and block housing projects in San Francisco. But on Thursday, March 20, the Planning Commission is set to vote on a long-overdue reform -- Preservation Design Standards that will make the process clearer, fairer, and more predictable.

These standards have gone through rounds of revisions with community input and expert feedback. But now, opponents are trying to stall much-needed progress.

Why this matters:

  • It’s a well-researched, expert-driven policy. The AIA has provided detailed feedback to ensure these standards work for housing, not against it.
  • These standards help make preservation rules clearer for housing projects. They ensure transparency in what’s expected from both builders and planners so projects don’t get bogged down in arbitrary review.
  • We need housing rules that are clear and fair. Delaying this vote just means keeping the same broken, discretionary system that has stalled housing for years.

We need pro-housing voices to speak out.

RSVP now, and thank you for being a pro-housing advocate!
