Stomp Out Slumlords Happy Hour and Fundraiser

Start: Wednesday, June 15, 2022 5:30 PM

A crowd of tenants and activists carrying "Cancel Rent" banners march through a street in downtown DC. Estela, a Latina tenant leader, speaks into a microphone in the center.

Join the tenant organizers from Metro DC DSA’s Stomp Out Slumlords (SOS) to eat, drink, and fundraise to send delegates to Los Angeles for the first convention of the Autonomous Tenants Union Network (ATUN)! Our dozen delegates are a diverse set of working class tenant leader/organizers, and we need your help to get them to Los Angeles.

The ATUN conference is a rare and valuable opportunity for working class people, like our delegate Estela, to meet other tenant organizers across the country, to share strategy and tactics, and to build a unified, militant tenants’ movement across this country. Estela led the fight for better conditions at her own building and used her skills to organize other buildings into our tenant union. Or Barbara, who lives at Marbury Plaza in Southeast, where the A/C went out for a month last summer. Whenever we have a rally, Barbara is there on the megaphone. And she doesn't just speak—she recruits and drives her neighbors as well! We're fundraising so these women can share these skills and learn from other tenant unions, like the militant Hillside Villa tenants in LA who forced the city to expropriate their building from the slumlord exploiting them.

Please join us at Midlands to hang out, learn more about tenant organizing in the DMV, and help us raise money to send our working-class tenant leaders to Los Angeles.

Can’t make it to the event but want to get involved? You can donate directly and/or get on the list to join our anti-eviction canvasses and other actions by emailing tenants@mdcdsa.org.

Located a short walk from the Georgia Ave-Petworth station on the Green and Yellow Lines, Midlands is an outdoor venue with a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and food choices including vegetarian and gluten-free options.

This event is open to DSA members and non-members!

Dietary restrictions: The menu allows outside food. Mobility: Midlands is one floor and (we think) step-free. (Confirmation pending.)
