SURJ Calling In Workshop: September 12, 2020

Start: Saturday, September 12, 202012:00 PM

End: Saturday, September 12, 2020 2:30 PM

As Malcolm X said in 1964, "The Negroes aren’t the racists. Where the really sincere white people have got to do their ‘proving’ of themselves is not among the black victims, but out on the battle lines of where America’s racism really is — and that’s in their own home communities; America’s racism is among their fellow whites. That’s where sincere whites who really mean to accomplish something have got to work."

This workshop aims to help us do exactly that. This workshop is designed to increase participants' ability to engage in conversations around race, racism, and police brutality. We will develop skills to move other white people into action by “calling in” instead of “calling out.” We will define white fragility, learn tactics to shape conversations, and then apply those lessons to practice scenarios. Participants should leave the workshop with tools for calling more white people into the movement for racial justice, specifically around police accountability. We don't claim to have all the answers, but together, we can do better.

This is a participatory workshop with discussion and breakout groups. Being able to see and hear each other is key for creating a good shared experience. Please plan on using video and audio throughout and attending at a time you can be fully present. Please contact us for questions about accessibility and accommodations.

Tickets are limited, and donations will support Black-led organizing on the front lines.
