Join us to hear why methane is a serious, but solvable, issue for climate action.
With Danny Lee, an award-winning Executive Director with innovative
sustainable/environment sector expertise. He is currently a Winchester Action on the Climate Crisis’ (WinACC) trustee; Citizens Advice advisor and Winchester area co-ordinator for Energise South Downs - a non-profit co-operative promoting opportunities for community energy. He is passionate about raising the understanding about the extremely damaging impacts from methane.
And Emily Mott who is working with the Weald Action Group (WAG) and South East Climate Alliance to fight against oil & gas development across the Weald and the Isle of Wight in the South East of England.
Methane is a really powerful greenhouse gas which is responsible for more than 25 per cent of the warming we are experiencing today. (IPCC) It has a Global Warming Potential more than 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. But cutting methane emissions could be relatively easy.
- Leaks from coal, oil and natural gas extraction and processing are responsible for a third of all methane. We are particularly concerned about local leaks from drilling for oil at Horndean and potentially from the pipes laid through landfill sites for Southern Water's recycling plant.
- Levels can be cut quickly and substantially if governments and industry get on board.
- Energy firms can greatly reduce their emissions using technology that is already developed – and cheap.
