The Retirement of the Majority Rally: Catch 22 before 2022
Start: Tuesday, July 14, 2020• 9:00 AM
End: Tuesday, July 14, 2020•12:30 PM
The Retirement of the Majority Rally: Catch 22 before 2022 will be on Tuesday, July 14th at 9:00AM at the North East corner of County Farm Rd. & Manchester Rd. in Wheaton. Parking will be at 421 N. County Farm Rd. We will be gathering at the corner just across the parking lot from where the county board will meet. Simultaneously, the event will be livestreamed on FaceBook with a virtual protest program as well.
Current Hosts: Indivisible DuPage, Naper Youth for BLM, Elmhurst Alliance for Racial Reform, Lombard Allies for Racial Justice, TIER, Carol Stream Community Activists, and Hinsdale for BLM. These groups will celebrate the end of the one party rule in DuPage County. We are educating the community about 22 state policy initiatives that could be done in the next legislative session that would stop killing BIPOC when they are signed into law. (A more succinct document is coming, but they are here bit.ly/Legislative-Options.)
Peter DiCianni needs to be held accountable and this protest will ensure that the public will not look away. He was protesting Black Lives Matter with no regard for who he was harming with his maskless hateful rhetoric, his unprofessional written response, and ignorant policies & electoral actions. The reality is that we live in a one party county that has lost the social contract required to govern. The DuPage County Board is on a powder keg of an election cycle in which if they lose 3 of the 6 races, or half, they will lose the majority of votes that they have held for almost 2 centuries. This event will celebrate the retirement of their majority rule over the second largest county in the state, which we predict will be by the end of this year. As we rally for their retirement, we are also rallying for a more equitable and just DuPage County.
This event will essentially be an authentic BIPOC activist fair directed at young people organized with and by young people. There will be a large community art build so no need to bring signs. There will be speakers ranging from youth activists to candidates and educators. We will be directing public commenters to the board, during the entire meeting. We fully support our state's efforts with COVID so masks are required and will be given out. There will be a free COVID testing Car Caravan. There will be people to register voters and help them learn about the different electoral issues happening in the next 120 days. There will be celebration cupcakes and music to mark the retirement! We will ensure that attendees learn how to get involved, get a civics education, participate in a community renaissance and have fun.
Our Demands
1. There should be a clearly defined method for censuring elected officials in DuPage County. Not having one is unacceptable.
2. Peter DiCianni should be censured for his actions in the many videos and in his written words. If he isn’t it will be clear public accountability of elected officials is gone.
3. Peter DiCianni should be removed from chairing the Health and Human Services Board for his unacceptable behavior. If he isn’t, it will be clear they don’t have acceptable standards.
4. He has violated the ethics Agreement he swore an oath to. He should be removed. A vote needs to be taken, even if it is in the court of public opinion.
General Description
The DuPage County Board is on a powder keg of an election cycle in which if they lose 3 of the 6 races, or half, they will lose the majority of votes that they have held for almost 2 centuries. This event will celebrate the retirement of their majority rule over the second largest county in the state, which we predict will be by the end of this year.
This event will essentially be an authentic BIPOC activist fair directed at young people organized with and by young people. There will be a lot of moving parts so here’s a breakdown of the event.
There will be a large community art build so no need to bring signs. (DATE TBD)
There will be speakers ranging from youth activists to candidates and educators. We will be directing public commenters to the board, during the entire meeting.
We fully support our state's efforts with COVID so masks are required and provided. There will be a free COVID testing Car Caravan.
There will be people to register voters and help them learn about the different electoral issues happening in the next 120 days.
To keep with the theme, there will be celebration cupcakes and music to mark the retirement!
Most importantly, we will ensure that attendees learn how to get involved, get a civics education, participate in a community renaissance and have fun.
Peter DiCianni’s actions are representative of a larger issue; the complacency of the county board speaks volumes during a global cry for equality and justice for black lives and other minority groups. This event is not only meant to wish DiCianni and those who are silent a farewell, but it will introduce a new era of equity and reform.
