Does capitalism upset our mental equilibrium? Is mental health tied to our material well-being and our experience of public safety? Are there models we can draw upon to create a public health system and the material conditions to improve our mental well-being?
Establishment voices have identified people experiencing mental instability as an impediment to public safety and deployed police to address an issue that we know cannot be ameliorated with the weapons of the carceral state. The non-profit left has offered lackluster solutions that fail to address people’s material needs, and are often carceral themselves.
As socialists, we want to develop an anti-capitalist vision for mental health, starting with prevention. NYC DSA welcomes you to the beginning of this conversation.
Our panel will include:
Kristen Smith, a representative from the National DSA Disability Working Group
clinical practitioners and DSA activists Illapa Sairitupac, Christie Offenbacher, and Steven Dube,
epidemiologists Seth Prins & John R. Pamplin II,
and historian of Red Vienna Phillip Henry.
There will be extensive time for audience participation.
