Plastics are all around us. The world has produced more than 10 billion tons of plastics, and we keep making more. Much more! US plastic production is expected to triple by 2050. By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions from plastic will equal those of nearly 300 coal-fired power plants. Microplastics are present in our food, our water, our lungs, our brains, and our blood. Forty percent of all plastic goes for single-use, throwaway items.

Please join us in watching and discussing The Story of Plastic, an Emmy-winning documentary that reveals the truth behind the catastrophe. We’ll see mountains of trash and waterways choked with waste. We’ll learn about ecosystems that have been devastated and communities that have been smothered by plastic pollution. We’ll also meet the global movement rising up in response.

On Monday, August 15, you will receive a code that allows you to stream the film at your convenience. In a separate email, you will receive a Zoom link for our follow-up on Thursday, August 25. At that gathering, we will discuss the film and meet with Nicole Kurian, Legislative Director at Californians Against Waste. Nicole will present an overview of the plastic crisis in California, outline next steps, and answer our questions. We’ll end with a call for one simple action from all who participate. Please join us!

The event will have closed captioning.
