A discussion with Dan Connell

Four armies along with several ad hoc militias are fighting in and around northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Each side blames the other(s) for atrocities, amid warnings of mass starvation and accusations of genocide. The U.S., a long-time strategic partner of Ethiopia, calls for an end to hostilities and a negotiated settlement, threatening sanctions against all parties. All this in a country led by a recent Nobel Peace prize winner. Gloucester-based author and activist Dan Connell will try to sort this out in a MAPA webinar and explore the prospects and possibilities for peace in the region.

Dan Connell

Dan Connell—a journalist-turned-aid-professional-and-author—is a research affiliate at Boston University whose work on the Horn of Africa spans five decades. He has reported for BBC, Associated Press, Reuters, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, New York Guardian and others and consulted for aid agencies and human rights organizations, including one he founded, Grassroots International. His books include Against All Odds: A Chronicle of the Eritrean Revolution (1993 and 2021), Rethinking Revolution: New Strategies for Democracy & Social Justice (2002), Conversations with Eritrean Political Prisoners (2005); and the Historical Dictionary of Eritrea (2010 and 2019). His most recent trip to Ethiopia was in April.
