They Fly, We Choke: Stop The Expansion of London City Airport
Start: Saturday, July 27, 2024•10:00 AM
On the 27th of July from 10am, Fossil Free London is joining forces with the Climate Justice Coalition, Extinction Rebellion, and with local community groups to protest the expansion of London City Airport.
We will meet outside the Department for Transport which will approve or reject London City Airport's expansion plans this summer.
This is in spite of the fact that, in 2023, 1 in 4 flights leaving the airport were half empty.
These flights are costing lives: 7.5% of deaths in Newham can be attributed to air pollution.
In a climate crisis, the last thing we should do is expand half empty airports built for corporate and wealthy travellers.
The vast majority of Newham have never flown from city airport before, this is an airport built for the mega-rich to choke the rest.
The average salary of a London City Airport user was £85,000, whilst in Newham the average was £24,162 for an entire household.
This is a global pattern, 80% of the world's population has never flown and only 1% of people create 50% of global aviation emissions.
The super-rich are fuelling climate chaos to live in luxury, whilst the poor suffer the worst effects.
So what are you waiting for? Ordinary people can stop this madness. When we come together we can move mountains.
Join us on the 27th of July from 10am to make our voices heard!
