Vigil to Stop the BOMB TRAINS in ERIE, PA
Start: Wednesday, July 06, 2016•12:15 PM
End: Wednesday, July 06, 2016• 1:00 PM
On Wednesday July 6th at 12:15, join our vigil with the Benedictines For Peace to stop oil trains in ERIE, PA! We now see 34 trains per week rumbling though our downtown and residential neighborhoods and suburbs, and we cannot be protected from a Quebec-like accident.
On July 6, 2013, an oil train derailed and exploded in tragic Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, killing 47 people. This year the third annual Stop Oil Trains week of action will call attention to the threat of oil trains across North America, the people who are stopping them, and the need for 100% clean and safe energy.
This past year saw a town in North Dakota evacuated after a May derailment and explosion; another major derailment and explosion in Illinois in March; and a February derailment and explosion in West Virginia, which destroyed a home, forced the evacuation of 1,000 people, and caused the governor to declare a state of emergency. Last month the same thing happened in Oregon.
Oil companies and government are making decisions on new oil train terminals at refineries across the country. But, wherever Big Oil tries to expand, communities across the US and Canada are organizing, and winning. We’ve stopped new oil train terminals and fought to keep extreme oil in the ground -- for our health, our safety, and our climate.
This week we will demonstrate the power of our movement with 100 events across the US and Canada to #StopOilTrains and show that clean, safe energy is 100% Possible right now.
Let's #StopOilTrains together and show that clean, safe energy is 100% Possible right now! Join this vigil by the Benedictines for Peace on Wednesday, July 6th at 12:15 in Erie's Perry Square.
