Volunteer Workday: Boundary Marking

Start: Thursday, February 16, 2023 9:30 AM

End: Thursday, February 16, 2023 4:00 PM

Take a hike with us and help mark the boundaries for protected land in Lenoir!

Background: The property, called the City of Lenoir Watershed, is 588 acres and is under a conservation easement because it features important waterways, plants, and wildlife habitat. Foothills Conservancy of NC monitors this land for natural occurrences such as: erosion, mudslides, or flooding. We also look for intentional violations of the easement including: trash dumping, trespassing, and hunting. Marking the boundaries clearly will help alert others to the significance of this land and hopefully deter them from committing any violations.

Where to meet: We will carpool for about 5 minutes from the 2nd parking area at the Lenoir Rotary Soccer Complex. (1050 Zacks Fork Rd, Lenoir, NC 28645)

What to expect: No experience is necessary, but you must be comfortable walking off trail on potentially steep terrain, and okay with working alone. Volunteers may be asked to carry flagging, signs, nails, hammers, and/or paint and paint brushes (bring a daypack if you have one!) A demonstration will be given on how to mark a boundary and all tools will be provided. We will then split up, with mapping devices, and walk the boundary - marking as we go.

What to bring:
  • Daypack
  • Water Bottle(s)
  • Dress in warm layers
  • Lunch (only light snacks provided)
  • Closed-toed shoes w/ ankle protection

Rain Date: February 17, 2023
