Voting Rights Candlelight Vigil - New Port Richey, FL

Start: Tuesday, August 06, 2019 8:00 PM

End: Tuesday, August 06, 2019 9:00 PM

#WeVoteWeCount #RestoreTheVote

On Tuesday, August 6th, Voting Rights advocates around the country will hold candlelight vigils to shed light on the impact of the Shelby decision, and demand that Congress restore the voting rights protections in the Voting Rights Act to help ensure that every person has a voice regardless of the color of their skin.

All area residents, democracy activists, group organizers and their volunteers are invited to join us on the sidewalk in front of the New Port Richey office of Representative Gus Bilirakis at 8PM (7132 Little Road, New Port Richey, FL 34654) to help drive home the point that we're seeing discriminatory voting laws emerge across the country - including voter ID laws, voter purges, and gerrymandering - all of which are infringing on the right to vote and suppressing the voices of entire communities.

Born out of the March on Selma, the Voting Rights Act was created to protect each person's right to vote. While the Act was successful for decade, it was gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013 in the disastrous Shelby County v. Holder decision.

Please join us as we display our displeasure for their decision and bring to light that Rep. Gus Bilirakis has yet to co-sponsor:

H.R.4 - Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019

by attending with flashlights or battery operated candles. Please let us know you plan to attend by submitting your RSVP now.

In solidarity!
