Paul Atwood served in the U.S. Marine Corps where his opposition to war emerged. He joined Vietnam Veterans Against the War as soon as he learned of its existence. In 1985 he was one of the founders of the Boston chapter of Veterans For Peace, the Major General Smedley D. Butler Brigade.

He earned his Ph.D at Boston University with Howard Zinn. He is author of "War and Empire: The American Way of Life" (2010, London, Pluto Press), and edited "Sticks and Stones: Living With Uncertain Wars". He has published numerous articles and has written frequently for the online magazine Counterpunch.

Now retired, he taught at the University of Massachusetts Boston for more than 30 years and still teaches courses on U.S. foreign policy and was also a principal founder of the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences at UMB. The Center was named after a veteran who succumbed at a young age to the poison of Agent Orange.
