The American labor force is characterized by unprecedented diversity. Racial justice and civil rights need to be at the forefront of the labor movement. Join us in a discussion on how our union can champion racial justice and civil rights and make the labor movement a more equitable place for workers of color.
We will hear from three wonderful panelists who will discuss their work on racial justice and equity:
Cherika Carter, Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington State Labor Council
Cherika Carter (she/her) was elected Secretary Treasurer of the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO in October 2022. She is a certified Pharmacy Technician by trade and has been a union member for over half of her life. As a graduate of THE Ohio State University, she is a forever Buckeye, but the evergreen state is home. When she isn’t thinking about growing political power or fighting for Washington’s working families, she’s on a quest to find the perfect Sunday brunch spot with friends.
Representative Mia Gregerson, Representative of Washington's 33rd legislative district and Chair of the House Members of Color Caucus
Mia was first appointed in 2013 to represent the 33rd Legislative District, including SeaTac, Normandy Park, Des Moines, and parts of Kent, Burien, Renton, and unincorporated King County. Mia also served on the SeaTac City Council from 2008 to 2015. Many of her legislative accomplishments include serving as Chair of the House Members of Color Caucus and Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, expanding voting rights, ensuring our residents are housed, helping to establish Washington’s first Office of Equity, championing statewide digital equity, and being part of the so-called “food fighters” who work together on legislation to help the food insecure. She prides herself in representing one of the most racially diverse districts in the state.
Melissa Rubio, Political Director of One America
Melissa joined the OA family in 2020 and is the architect of how our organizing, leadership development, civic engagement and advocacy programs work together to make lasting, systemic changes for the immigrant and refugee communities in WA State.Melissa comes from a mixed-heritage, working class family and is dedicated to building power so that all people, regardless of age, race, immigration status and income are able to live full, joyous and thriving lives. Melissa has been instrumental in building OneAmerica’s power building program that centers those furthest from power as decision-makers in our electoral and issue organizing work.
