World AIDS Day is a day to memorialize those we have lost to HIV/AIDS and recommit to our goals to ending the epidemic. We have not yet ended HIV/AIDS because we have not ended homelessness, a crisis rooted in structural racism and political disregard for people who are Black, Latinx and poor. The challenges posed by homelessness and housing instability, food insecurity, lack of employment, stigma, and other factors are what make it harder for our community to access HIV testing, prevention, and care.
This year for World AIDS Day, Housing Works will hold our annual observance of the Reading of the Names at the New York City AIDS Memorial. By reading the names aloud of those who have died of AIDS, we will collectively mourn loved ones lost, and ground ourselves in another year of advocacy for those still living with HIV/AIDS.
Clients, staff and community members will read from a list of names for 8 hours at NYC AIDS Memorial, from 10AM-6PM. At 11AM, we will host a press conference, calling on Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams to take action on ending the epidemic in New York City and State.
