It’s time to come out of the cupboard, regroup and refocus our rebellion.

COVID, lockdowns, oppressive laws and politics have taken their toll on XR in the past two years, but we see every day that the Climate Emergency has not gone away.

Now that the dust has settled on the federal election it’s clear that Australians want urgent action to reduce greenhouse emissions and environmental destruction. However, it is also now clear that our new government has no interest in going beyond the 43% reduction by 2030 which they took to the election. Unfortunately, 43% reduction by 2030 is not a target at all. It is the number you get when you continue with business as usual with no new legislation or regulation. It is the easy option. It has no basis in what the science is now saying we need to do to avoid global climate chaos.

43% reduction is a tap on the brakes, but it won’t stop the car from going over the cliff. The window of opportunity to cut emissions before tipping points and feedback loops kick in and we lose control of the global climate system is closing fast.

There are progressive members in the new government who get it and will push for the emergency response and climate justice we need, but they need our support to roll the die-hards in their party who are more interested in their own jobs than in the safety of our children and our planet. We need to seize this moment, before the window of opportunity closes.

If so, then please join us at the first of two events that we are holding in Sydney in September.

On the first day, we'll catch up with old friends, and meet new ones, and reflect on our experiences in the climate movement in a safe and supportive environment. This will be facilitated by the Regen Working Group. On the second day, we'll roll up our sleeves, reset our goals, structure and tactics and begin the construction of a new and powerful rebellion in Sydney.

Already, some Rebels are starting to emerge from the woodwork. But we need all of you to make this work before we go over the cliff.

The first Gathering Day will be held on September 11, from 2-5pm, at 107 Projects in Redfern.
