YDSA Night School: What is Socialism?

Start: Friday, May 1, 2020 at 2:00 AM GMT

This is a virtual event

Socialist Night School is a rolling open course that provides opportunities for YDSA members to ground their political work in the rich theoretical and historical traditions of the socialist left.

Classes are down-to-earth, inclusive spaces that give YDSA comrades a chance to grow their politics together, regardless of background knowledge, affiliation, or whether you’ve attended a class before. You don’t even have to be a member of YDSA — everyone is welcome!

Thursday April 30th’s session answers the question, “What is Socialism?” We’ll be examining some of the basic ideas of socialist thought.

Here are the suggested readings. You don't need to read them all before joining the class, but we believe these readings will provide a useful foundation for better understanding the topic:

  1. ABCs of Socialism, Chapter 1: “Isn’t America already kinda socialist?” by Chris Maisano
  2. ABCs of Socialism, Chapter 2: “At least capitalism is free and democratic right?” by Erik Olin Wright
