Milwaukee children deserve opportunities like regular art, music, gym, language and library programming, access to a school nurse in every school, and high-quality teachers and support staff in every classroom – the same opportunities as their peers in neighboring suburban schools. In recent years, MPS has made significant investments to expand opportunities for students in these areas and more. MPS was able to make these improvements with the overwhelming support of Milwaukee voters in 2020.

Unfortunately, the Republican state legislature has not upheld its obligation to properly fund public education. In the 2021-23 state budget, per pupil funding was frozen and public school students received zero new dollars. Since 2009, when the state discontinued the standard of indexing public school funding increases to inflation, MPS students have fallen behind by nearly $3,400 per student per year. The legislature’s failure to adequately fund public education has left school districts throughout the state with one choice – go to referendum to maintain the opportunities students deserve or make painful cuts that will harm our children’s education and their prospects for future success. Accessibility standards on the Milwaukee DSA In-Person / Hybrid Meeting Checklist (based on the Accessibility Standards for Meetings) will be met for this event to the best of our ability. Please note that the space where we are meeting to assign turf and literature to canvassers meets all requirements. However, participants should know that canvassing requires quite a bit of walking and walking up stairs.
