Our wonderful 350 Silicon Valley Legislation/Policy team needs you! We have active volunteers working on climate issues with state regulatory agencies, in the California legislature, and in the U.S. Congress. The more people who sign on, the more we can accomplish!

We meet on Zoom twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7 pm. Our rolling agenda, meeting notes, and the zoom link are here with a wealth of resources.

This year we are focusing primarily on short-lived climate pollutants (principally methane and refrigerants); transportation; and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible. We're decentralizing our work: we've established teams that will each follow and campaign around just a few bills. This is helpful for volunteers with limited time, although people can join more than one team. As an example, here is 2022's original list:

  • Building decarbonization: 3 bills
  • Low-emissions cement: 3 bills
  • Climate finance and fossil fuel divestment: 5 bills
  • Reducing emissions: 4 bills
  • Reducing refrigerants (HFCs emissions): 1 bill
  • Hydrogen (as green as possible): 4 bills
  • Oil and gas: 5 bills
  • Plastics: 4 bills
  • Power sector, including CPUC/utility policy: 2 bills
  • Transportation: 10 bills

In addition, we're following bills that aim to revise Cap and Trade; regulate refrigerants and hasten the transition to less polluting "natural" refrigerants; and add climate education to the high school curriculum. And, we're engaging with our legislators on the state budget, which is instrumental in making climate action happen.

If you can help, please use the check boxes on this form to let us know where your interest lies. If you do NOT check one of the boxes, we'll let you know about opportunities to engage with your representatives in Sacramento or Washington, D.C., and send occasional updates about our work. If you check the box for the Legislation Team Google group, we'll send you agendas and meeting reminders.

We also have a smaller and very active Legislation Steering Committee open to all who want to learn more. Joining the group is a more dynamic way to tune in to our work than just receiving general email alerts. Come to a regular meeting or two to find out if this level of engagement is what you're looking for.

Our core group includes volunteers from Climate Reality Project chapters around the state, as well as folks from other local 350 groups in California. We are active participants in several coalitions—with other 350 groups around the state and the nation, with the Green California consortium of environmental groups working in Sacramento, and several others. Our teams also follow federal legislation and policy, with 350 Seattle.

We meet several times a year with our legislative representatives in California and Washington, D.C. We believe that working closely with our reps and maintaining strong, trusting relationships with state Senators, Assembly members, Congresspeople, and their staffs is key to our successful advocacy for strong climate bills and policy.

Thanks for joining us!
